What other video game genre do you favor outside of shmups?

I would imagine that the game examples of genres I listed could potentially be controversial, as well as the genres/subgenres that may have been excluded, but I feel that this list is fairly comprehensive and satisfactory for the purpose of the poll, especially considering I'm only limited to 10 poll options.

Other genres I might have included if I could have would be: Beat 'Em Up, Graphic Adventure/Visual Novel, Roguelike, Simulation, Sports, Stealth, Survivial Horror & Tower Defense.

I picked platformers btw. I love games like Limbo, Pid, Rayman, They Bleed Pixels, Super Meat Boy, etc etc...

Funny... on a similar poll I created on that other forum just over two months ago, I said "P.S. - Sorry to the shmup fans, as I know absolutely nothing about that genre."

My, how things change.

Pretty much anything else with similarly concentrated pace and emphasis on honed performance. Galaxy Force II, Final Fight and Raiden DX are ultimately the same kind of game to me. I also like relaxing with atmospheric adventure games like the earlier Resident Evils and Silent Hills from time to time, basically the opposite of the above.

Even on a first run through a tense horror game, though, it's still the same kind of gaming to me. I divide my games into performance and leisure, very roughly. Of course some blur the line, but I gravitate towards extremes.

I really like the arcade platformer, arcade shooting title (fond on Cabal/Blood Brothers/NAM-1975), and arcade puzzle titles. Nowadays I tend to pick more puzzle games so I picked that.

I play almost every type of game and do okay, except for hardcore "management" games with no action in them. I can compete in fighting games though I only really like 3rd Strike on GGPO, similar thing with RTSs and Starcraft but the skill ceiling there is ridiculous, being good doesn't mean much at all. I like FPS but can't compete, whatever it requires I haven't got it, still fun to play something older like HL1 deathmatch.
Mobas should be outlawed.

DOOM used to favor me well as my favorite FPS. But I prefer platformers and RTS-es more, like the classics Red Alert 2 and Warcraft II.

Golf / pool / bowling games, especially arcade style ones like Neo Turf Masters and Side Pocket.

Limiting yourself is kinda stupid, it can rob you of some really cool gaming experiences.

Having said that, I'm not a huge fan of RTS or Sports games, but I will try them out every once in a while.

Shmups, action-platformers and racing games are my gaming bread 'n butter. I do try to expose myself to other genres at semi-regular intervals as well, but sooner or later (usually sooner) I get bored with them because they don't offer what I want and then I return to my three standard genres.

Shmups and racing games are similar at the core, I think. In both you try to find the best, most efficient route through the stage/track. The difference is that with shmups your average playing time becomes longer the better you get, but with racing games it gets shorter.

I don't avoid any game like the plague but time and money are both limited resources and after almost 30 years at it you kinda start to realize which ones you like...

But yeah racing games are cool too, especially fast and completely unrealistic ones like Outrun or F-Zero.

Drivers/racers would be my second most loved genre, though I think my gaming tastes could be more accurately described without the use of traditional genre labels. Something like:

Games created between 1985 and 2005 by Japanese developers with a strong emphasis on the single player experience.

I play a lot of Star Trek Online. Its the best IP. The game can be played creatively - You design your characters and ships and then build them up suited to your playing style. Its fun dicking around with friends and it has a half-decent mission/map editor too.

Agreed, Now that I think about it the two genre's I've sunk the most time into are Racing Games and Shmups.

I went with Puzzles, although driving games would be a close second. I just find a generally have a lot less time for games than I used to these days though (a job that keeps me busy certainly doesn't help with that.)
