Exostorm - My Shmup

Post by soal »

Hi Everyone,

I'm the engineer on a shmup called exostorm we've developed as a side project that I'd like you guys to take a look at if you'd be so kind.

It's basically done - however I found this board recently and it looks like there are some fairly specific concerns you all would like addressed in new shmups. :) While I doubt I can change any core mechanics this late in development, input schemas are fairly easy to muck around with and if it makes the difference between a yes or no vote on greenlight, then I'll see what I can do. :D

Currently the demo is only Win32, and the input is only an xbox 360 controller. I've already had feedback on my greenlight page suggesting I add D-pad support since a shmup fan requested it. Sounds like a lot of people on here use arcade sticks which won't be picked up with XInput (what I'm using now), so I'll have to figure something out here. Probably will end up using the SDL joystick input.

In the meantime, you can grab the demo here:

screenshots and the trailer are on our website:

I'd love some votes on greenlight if you like it:

I'll be around off and on over the next week (As I said, I still have a day job.), but this weekend I'll be at the captivate conference as we've managed to place as a finalist in their game competition. If anyone is going to be there please stop by!

Thanks everyone!

Hey this game looks fairly nice, I voted yes on the greenlight page, however I cannot test and give you proper feedback as I do not have a 360 controller with me, while we are at it, i'll suggest that if you do get around implementing keyboard controls (and put them in an UPDATED demo), MAKE YOUR KEYS reconfigurable as everybody has their sweet preferrences.

I'm at work, so all I can do is look at the screenshots. Judging from those, I'm very intrigued if the gameplay is as solid as the art.

Will try the demo out as soon as I get home. Have you tried getting your game on Desura?

oh wow , thats beautiful !! and also nice to see some enemy flying patterns!!

Everything seems highly polished! but id say the music is a bit generic/weak..may not seem like a big issue, but look at what most shumps "become" renowned for ..
Really nice art style.
damn, that first boss !! the way he comes in , this is serious stuff.

They blew up the moon, bastards!
DLing now, exciting.

EDIT:
Likes. A bit slow (in the action dep.) but really nice.
Good luck on steam! What's the percentage to top 100 now? :)

You got my vote, I tested it and it feels good, the 3d backgrounds look great. Might be a bit easy though, some footage of 'hardcore mode' would help.

Keyboard controls work and they're set to the standard arrows and ZXC, agreed that reconfigurable is always good though.

Sorry I wasn't clear - there's key, mouse, and 360 input. I meant the only *controller* is the 360 controller.

I tried this for a while last night. Played it with my 360 controller.

For the most part, it's a solid game. I can't remember what difficulty I played though, or if there was an option to choose the difficulty, but it felt a bit slow and lacking in action.

The graphics are incredibly solid. I didn't mind or notice the audio though. And I keep on describing the shmups I've been enjoying as "punchy," but I can't quite apply that label to this game yet.

I'm sure you'll continue to do good work on this game and I can see it improving into something that I can enjoy immensely.

Good art and some stuff like glowing bullets.. however hardcore mode is fucked up (are those boring suicide-bullets the only change?)
Also, why not have a visible hitbox?

You can also skip that stage 1 boss rocket pattern by just not shooting the rockets
