? about a couple of Capcom collections on the Saturn
I'm thinking about getting the Commando/Mercs collection, and the Dungeons and Dragons collection.
How accurate are they to the arcade versions?
Is the PSX version of the Commando/Mercs collection equal to the Saturn one?

D&D lags and has some minor changes if I recall, and it's restricted to only 2 players. Why wouldn't you just get the PS3 port at this point? Unless you don't have a PS3, then that's understandable.

I can't speak for the PSX one, but Mercs on Saturn is perfect as far as I can tell, and as long as you're going to play it in tate. In horizontal mode, it's scaled. The other two games older on the collection IIRC aren't quite the exact resolution and have a tiny border (Gun.Smoke and Commando).
Mercs doesn't have the Original mode from the Genesis version, though, which IMO makes that version superior even if it's not 1:1 with the arcade
That mode is just a much more playable game.

I assume you're talking about the JP physical release and not the shitty US release.drauch wrote:Why wouldn't you just get the PS3 port at this point? Unless you don't have a PS3, then that's understandable.

Gunsmoke plays brilliantly with the Saturn pad. The 6 button line-up just feels so right.

D and D on the Saturn lags? God dammit.
So, tell me about this Japanese PS3 release? I have played it on PSN, and I think the filter looks like shit. I know the JP port is supposed to be done by Capcom themselves.
Any side by side comparisons, or anyone who has played it first hand?
Mercs scales in hori? Is there nothing that can be done about that? I can't TATE a 32 inch TV.

I've cleared PS1 CG4's Gun.Smoke and Mercs back-to-back with MAME. Both games played identically down to really obscure tricks and enemy behaviours. Excellent ports.

Good man. I just went for the PCBs (although I also have the SS versions for the hell of it); too good of games not to have in a proper format in English.drauch wrote:Yup.Bar81 wrote:I assume you're talking about the JP physical release and not the shitty US release.drauch wrote:Why wouldn't you just get the PS3 port at this point? Thanks for the link. I always thought the PSX and SS versions were similar; I guess not. Oh well, only my SS is set up for tate so I have to live with SS Capcom Gen 4 (although the best game on there - Mercs - I have on PCB so I'm guessing that's arcade perfectBIL wrote:Good thread on thisevil_ash_xero wrote:Is the PSX version of the Commando/Mercs collection equal to the Saturn one?

Just read over this. I'm not sure if I understand correctly. Obviously the Saturn version doesn't look right in TATE. But does the PSX version look squashed in Hori? Or is it in it's proper aspect ratio?

Re: ? about a couple of Capcom collections on the Saturn
I read Saturn doesn't output SNES resolution, hence the deformed Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts and Mega Man X3 ports. Moreover, I thought Vulgus in tate looked more MAME-like on PSX than Saturn, as if Saturn couldn't output the original PCB resolution either.

Re: ? about a couple of Capcom collections on the Saturn
The vertical games in the Japanese PS1 Generations discs have three screen options. There's no disgusting "tate blown up to cover a 4:3 screen" mode, don't worry!evil_ash_xero wrote:But does the PSX version look squashed in Hori? Or is it in it's proper aspect ratio?
Type 1 (yoko): full playfield scaled down to fit a yoko display, with correct aspect ratio.
Type 2 (yoko): slightly zoomed-in playfield, with some status indicators (score, etc) off to the side.
Type 3 (tate): TATE, glorious TATE! Just be careful now, y'hear?
Correct, as JoshF said in the linked topic, the SS can't do SNES resolution. PS1 can, SOTN uses it AFAIK.Obiwanshinobi wrote:I read Saturn doesn't output SNES resolution, hence the deformed Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts and Mega Man X3 ports. The older vertical Generations titles like Vulgus and 1942 use a not quite 3:4 aspect ratio. Wouldn't surprise me if the Saturn didn't handle this as well either.

It's for this same reason that Rockman X3 on the Saturn has these strange borders:BIL wrote:Correct, as JoshF said in the linked topic, the SS can't do SNES resolution.

Re: ? about a couple of Capcom collections on the Saturn
Yes, but 'shitty' is a huge over-statement regarding the digital version. It is still a great port, just not as out-of-the-park as the totally sexed out Japanese physical version.drunkninja24 wrote:Bar81 wrote:I assume you're talking about the JP physical release and not the shitty US release.drauch wrote:Why wouldn't you just get the PS3 port at this point? CMoon, have you played the JP Physical release of D&D? If so, could you let me know about what kind of filters it has? Wallpapers?

Re: ? about a couple of Capcom collections on the Saturn
I've got the JP PS3 D&D port and it has a handful of filter options. Thankfully it has a smoothing off feature (great) and two scan line filters (neither of which look particularly great running through 1080p HDMI), but I'm guessing it would look best through a CRT via RGB. Needs more testing.
Granted, the Iron Galaxy scan line software is horrible, but this Capcom in-house scan line filter is barely noticeable. Why can't all HD games have scan lines like Raiden Fighters Aces and Mushimesama Futari?
In terms of the port quality though, there is really only one choice. The JP PS3 version is immaculate and comes filled with more trinkets than the red dragon's cave.
Plus, it's a phenomenal four player game -- something the Saturn version and its unbearable loading completely lacks.

Re: ? about a couple of Capcom collections on the Saturn
Yeah, that sums up the differences nicely. The Iron Galaxy port is quite nice, and as far as I can tell arcade accurate, good net code, etc. Standard ugly ass filters. It does have some unlockables, stage select, etc. but these aren't on the same level as the JP set. In a perfect world I'd own the latter, but the former is still a very respectable port.
Edit: Rupert H> It would be great to see how the two ports look side by side (IE filter software), since as you point out, all the Iron Galaxy ports look ugly. I'd kind of assumed this was the reality of upscaling all these games.
