Anyone had success playing DDP on a US PS1 w/ AR/Goldfinger?
So yeah, for most people, myself included, the incorrect music is played or not played at all. I vaguely remember seeing posts of people getting it working by booting with a demo disc, but I can't find them now. The only posts I can find say that it's basically impossible due to the Table of Contents not being identical.
Kind of just posting to see if there is some magical NTSC-U disc that may work well enough to boot with... Wipeout 3 certainly isn't it.

I just use a region chip-modded USA-region PSX SCPH-5500 model to play DDP properly without the worry of resorting to the use of a Goldfinger. Of course, using an external Goldfinger device with a modded PSX opens up additional perks of listening to the usual Redbook & Yellowbook BGM audio files + sound effects files and viewing various graphic jpeg dumps. Not to mention viewing all of the assorted decoded FMV clips on the various PSX gaming titles (without the need to play said game) as well. How cool is that? It does open up more opportunities to check out your favorite PSX game in more depth than with just a plain-vanilla modded PSX any ol' day.

After a massive load time, stage 1 will work without music, and then it will freeze in the transition to stage 2.
I always suspected it's because JPS1 has that extra music channel the US hardware doesn't have, so the game is eternally trying to play sound through the nonexistent channel. It just gives up after trying to load the stage 2 music for so long.

Eh? That can't be right. I've never heard of any HW differences between PS1 regions. The PS1's sound output is just 24 hardware channel ADPCM with CD audio.DJ Incompetent wrote:After a massive load time, stage 1 will work without music, and then it will freeze in the transition to stage 2.

Especially if a chipped US PS1 runs the game no issue.
If the game uses Redbook audio [like Ridge Racer Revolution], it will have TOC problems, and that's not fixable [without being chipped].
Easy test: stick game in CD player -- can you listen to the music?
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

I heard the audio in the game is redbook.

It's redbook, and I have the same issue DJ Incompetent is describing.
If I try to play BGM's in the options screen it seems to play from the middle of the tracks, like it's using the start times from the wip3out CD.
I totally wouldn't mind modchipping a PS1, since they're a dime a dozen on craigslist, but I just don't know where to find a good modchip. All the websites look pretty shady. I know there has to be somebody with a stockpile of the things somewhere...

I had Dan Kramer, a former ex-Atari employee, (same guy of the classic Atari 5200 trackball designer) mod my PSX console...he did such a professional job that I'm not sure where the mod chip is anyways. He did it back in the summer of 1998 and his asking fee (which included return shipping) was quite reasonable indeed.

You might be lucky and have a local game store that offers the service. When I got a modchip for my PS2 for 100 bucks, I happened to simply find a local place that specialized in equipment upgrades. Great investment, made it so I could finally import a bunch of games from Playasia I'd been wanting. If you want something less shady, see if there's an actual in-store place that offers that sort of thing.BazookaBen wrote:I totally wouldn't mind modchipping a PS1, since they're a dime a dozen on craigslist, but I just don't know where to find a good modchip. I solved the dp, ddp ps2 no bgm problem by downloading the games on my ps3 with a JP psn account. I believe they were $10 each.

I use the PS Xchange disc to play imports on my PS1.
A Hardcore gamers reaction to the Lack of Kinect games. Apparently i could of played Dodonpachi with it if i beat a entirely in Japanese Visual Novel piece of shit game called Instant Brain

What the fuck is a Goldfinger? Seriously this is the first time I've ever heard of such a beast.
Modded PS1s can be had for $20-$40 if you know where to look (Hint: check out the marketplace either here or at Digitpress)

It's like an Action Replay but made by a different company so they needed to call it something else.
