There are barely any options in regards to changing the dimensions of the game screen.
Selecting 16:10 in the visual menu results in exactly the same aspect ratio in game.
Someone please tell me there is a way to fix this.
Can't you put your monitor in 4:3 mode?

When people make walkthroughs/guides of games they don't really know how to play, and admit that they think the game is a 'failure'. Progear isn't a failure by any means, (and neither is Akai Katana for that matter), you just think the gameplay sucks at least in part because you don't know really know what you're doing, so you're probably not the best candidate to go making a walkthrough... Sorry, but it's true, once you learn the beauty of gem cancelling, it's easily one of Cave's more fun games to enjoy for the sheer intensity and rush of navigating clouds of bullets only to convert them to point items. I noted several unusual things in that run that'd qualify as bad advice for an easy 1cc, like wasting a bomb on purpose before grabbing the stage 2 bomb, attacking the traincars at the start of stage 3 (which is good for high scores but makes it way harder as the turrets inside 'em start shooting and makes the re-appearance of the train later in the level very tricky, he uses a bomb when the train appears because the turret shots nearly kill him), using gunner mode primarily during boss fights when playing as Bolt, even though Bolt's rapid shot actually does a good deal more damage than gunner mode does (this happens a lot, Progear is not DDP where holding shot always = stronger), messing up the super easy to tapdodge last set of giant planes before the final boss (protip: a bomb is not needed here ._.), not misdirecting the stage 5 boss's chase attack, etc... "this game is a failure and the gameplay is shit in my opinion but here's how to clear it!"... not the sort of thing I want in a run that's supposed to show how to easily (i.e. badly) 1CC a game, especially not when it's a shmup that's really fucking fun at high level play.

I'm putting detailed annotations in my run mostly out of spite, and because I'm so anal-retentive that I can't stand such a halfassed 'walkthrough' of a game I love. :V

to be fair, that 'goowang walkthrough' is still worse, though

You change your dog/cat/whatever water bowl, so it can drink some fresh water, then said pet ignores it and proceeds to drink from the second bowl with two day old water, and family complains no one bothers to change the poor thing's water bowl...

The lack of love for older comps/Operating Systems.

Seriously, I know there are emulators that'll run on Windows 98. Just point me at them. Don't tell me "get a better computer" or I'll kill you Sadako-style.

Wait, there are emulators that won't run on Windows 98? That's actually news to me [although not entirely surprising]
Hell, what system(s) are you looking to emulate without a Win9x compatible emulator?

Sloppy shits during work hours. Have to spend a good 15 minutes shitting and wiping, and still I end up smelling like perfumed shit. Not to mention feeling guilty asking for pay during shit-hours. "Where's the Right Guard - Anal Edition," I ask.

Also, unacceptably mundane dreams. The other night, I dreamed I had to fix a company fax machine. Last night, I dreamed I had made an error on the part-time scheduling form, and had to call a dude up to tell him he was on a different shift. (Don't worry, he was cool once I explained what happened.) Optimally, I dream of flying and defeating tornadoes with my fists.

Yep, dreaming about mundane things feels like you are wasting your imagination and your sleep time.
A few years ago I used to write down every strange dream I had.

What about a "What did you dream last night" thread?

Arcade machines are one of the main ones. MAME currently only runs on my laptop and I don't really like gaming on that.

Console emulators are a little easier to find, admittedly, although for my purposes they're less useful as a whole (pretty much... good for translated roms and thats it)

Needing to go to every class at university.
Since everyone sick can't just stay home and keep it away, nearly everyone is now sick. Like, 2/3ds of the people in class are sick. Everyone in the Student Union building will be sick by tomorrow, by way of eating some snack food with their hands immediately after touching the controllers.

There will probably be an 80% infection rate of whatever the hell sickness this is [sore as hell throat for 2 days, no coughing, rest of time coughing but not really sore throat, feels like your head is filled with glue during the days of soreness].

That would be a great thread. Or the actual worst. I dunno.

Hmm. Would be nice to see if there was a way to build MAME without any Windows NT/2000/XP dependencies. Probably would end up being SDLMAME but for Windows.

I would say something about updating [kind of like how I want to tell most XP users that from 7 to XP is as long as XP is from Windows 3.1 in terms of release year], but fuck that shit. Older OSes are almost as a rule faster, and I can reasonably understand why one would still use 98 today [NT has problems with lots of gaming related things, 2000 would be a bit heavy, XP similar to 2000 but even heavier, etc, etc].

Maybe you could use some Linux distro and run MAME there? The MAME build takes ages though [if you don't find somewhere that releases Linux MAME builds, I usually just build it from source and stick with one version for years until something supported in a new version catches my eye :P ], and will use a fuckton of disk in the process [there's like 200MB of source after decompressing, my MAME build folder is over 800MB, but it has source and intermediate files there]. Probably not a good solution, but it is a possibility.

To be honest, my Win98 machine is because I primarily play older PC games with it--many games (particularly from Windows 95/98) will not run on modern systems without workarounds, and sometimes not even then (I could never get Command and Conquer: Windows 95 Edition to work on Windows 7 even after downloading a fan-made patch and following detailed guides, to name just one example).

Emulation was always a secondary consideration, but it would be cool to have more things I could do with that PC, just because it feels like it often sits there and collects dust... and I'm reaching a point where emulation is actually becoming nostalgic.

Besides, X-Multiply on Windows 98 would be awesome.

A linux distro might be a suitable answer.

Yeah. I remember being super amazed at things like N64 emulation going full speed on my assy as hell computer way back when [even though N64 emulation is pretty much 90% cheating for speed instead of actual emulation, haha].

Hell, the first time I played Gunstar Heroes was when a friend of mine brought it in on a Zip disk or something and we played it in Gens [like, 9 or 10 years ago]. And I have fond memories of bringing my terrible PIII laptop over and the four of us were crowded around two keyboards playing Smash Bros. This was like, 7 or 8 years ago, heh.

---

Annoying shit: design changes that seem better but are objectively worse once you look at it.
Here's an example. The game corner in the Student Union used to just have a bunch of chairs [for the the console players] and a big table [for the PC gamers]. They removed all the chairs for the console players, put in a smaller table, but put in a couch. The problem is, it's a bitch to actually get near to the TVs now once people are playing Project M and Melee and even though there are 2 TVs open, there's no seating near them left.

Oh, the couch and table look nice, and the first few days, it seemed good. Then it sunk in.

I'm going to end up carrying a folding chair everywhere I go at this point.

When people ask you to call them to confirm a meeting, appointment, or because they need something from you. And then forget their phone. Or forget to charge it. Or forget to pay the bill. OR FORGET TO FSCKING CHECK THE FSCKING 8 MESSAGES THAT YOU LEFT THEM FOR THE PAST 4 HOURS BEFORE YOU LEAVE WORK SO YOU COULD CONFIRM IF YOU ARE GOING TO SEE THEM.

Seriously. It's not like charging a phone or paying the bill requires some sort of ancient ritual or sacrificing a rare animal to an angry deity. (Inability to pay for the service is excused).

This is a typical attrition war. Any of the last stages in Darius is tough enough that will require quite some practice, to be mastered. Avoid being in a hurry, especially with this title.
