Forgotten Worlds - two player 'chain lightning'

Does anyone know exactly what the chain-lighning effect between the two players does when you get close to each other - does it generally just boost weapon power (or do you need an Aura Stone or other power up for it to have any significance?)

I'm pretty sure its just a free weapon upgrade and an incentive to play co-op/pump more coins in.

I always thought it's just a weapons boost also. There was a manual floating around the internet which might have something.
