Is it safe to turn a PVM sideways?

Post by antibolo »

Considering that most (all?) Sony PVMs are basically cubic and therefore trivial to put on their sides without additional support, I've been wondering about how safe it is to do that in the first place. I've heard before that operating a CRT sideways may damage it, but is it really a genuine concern, or just something that manufacturers claim so they can avoid responsibility?

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: Make sure you turn it off for at least 20 mins before turning it. And if it's a larger modell, don't hurt yourself.

What is the rationale for the 20 min wait? Is it to make sure it has fully discharged?

LOL no, you wait to allow the thermistor in the degauss circuit to cool down and let the current flow through it again to the degauss coil so it can sort out purity problems caused by the rotation.
