Re: I DID IT

Post by Bonus! »

I finally cleared DDP SDOJ Novice with Maria (Type C) and Laser. I know, I know, for the superplayers on here novice modes don't count, but I thought it was pretty tough. I had spent an hour or so at least every other day for about the past three weeks in practice mode. Yesterday I managed to clear stage 5 including the boss on one credit, and with some bombs left, so I thought I'd now be ready to start trying to 1CC it. My reasoning was that if I managed to get to stage 5 with two lives and a full stock of bombs, I might be able to beat the game.

...and who would have thought that I would do so on my first try? I started getting really nervous once I entered stage 5 with two lives and one bomb left (later on got the second extend). I eventually beat the boss with nothing, nada, left over, and was fighting it the last third with a depleted bomb stock. Luckily, I got another hyper and then was able to finish it off. Boy was my heart pounding afterwards...

Here are two screenshots I've taken with my phone:

It seems that the game doesn't save hi scores. Is this correct?

SDOJ Novice is one of the tougher Novice clears in a Cave game, so it's by no means a bad clear. =D

Not sure what you mean by not saving hi scores - when you go into Novice mode and let the game demo play, the score screens for each shot type should appear and you should be able to view your old scores/initials. Haven't played SDOJ in a bit, but it may be like Futari in that it has a hiscore table for each shot type played that day and an alltime high score table for each you toggle by pressing A or B. Or maybe Novice doesn't save scores? I know Xbox 360 mode saves scores, I can go back later and look at 'em.

Make sure you're signed into an account when playing, obviously, since the scores are tied to each account.

Multiple accounts were the problem. Thanks for pointing this out.

Local retro/import shop holds a shmup/classic games/etc. meet every month with competitions on STG. This month was Blade Buster and I won! Got a repro cart as the prize! Has my score on it too :)

Funny that the xbox section is the most prominent there, considering I don't think I've ever seen anyone buy anything from there :V

Oh nice, wish I had some local competitions like that. What mode were you guys playing? How wide of a margin were you from the second place score? Did you end up trouncing the competitors? =D

We were doing the 5 minute mode. Second place score was something like 1.37m, mine was 1.44m.

First run of mine of the night was something around 1m, apparently before I got there a few people were getting around 800 or 900k.

I can definitely say having played in STGT probably helped a ton

BareknuckleRoo,

thanks for the video, really great run! I appreciate the comments. There is one part that kept giving me headaches: the planes before Volvox, but I'll try your hint of just staying to the left of the screen and dodging.

That's honestly the easiest part of stage 5 to do reliably because the dangerous shots they aim are fired directly at you and thus are easily avoided by tap dodging, If you start at the top or bottom of the screen, your gunner will finish off both planes before you reach the opposite side. Then you just have to move in the opposite direction (not smacking into any shots when changing direction), kill the next pair that shows up, and you're pretty much done. The only danger here is starting in the middle of the screen, you don't want to get cornered.

Thanks!

BTW, the mid-boss of stage 5 was the reason why I changed to using the plane with the spreadshot. I think this is one of the toughest parts of the entire game. It was a real joy watching your run!

So happy with this score. Probably impossible for me to get much higher, that was a pretty damn good run.

Congratulations!

You mentioned it took you 85 hours. Do you habitually track the amount of time you spend on a game?

Thanks. I keep track through the Play Time counter in MAME. I have about a little over 40 hours on both my laptop and my desktop.

Finally happy that I got this. I stopped playing this game back in February because of how frustrating it was for me and upon getting home from work this afternoon I decided to play some music and set a credit on this game after all the time. I was flipping out so much after I looped it that I died on the first big ship that flies in on the right at the first part of 2-1. Haha

For the run overall, it was a perfect up until Stage 5 where I began to trainwreck through the easiest parts - even dying on the final attack twice. I barely got through it on my last life.

Which version of MAME are you using? I'm using SDLMAME for OSX, and just checked all menus, but didn't find a playtime counter. There is only an "uptime" counter that starts from 0 every time you boot up MAME.

Just 300 million off my high score, I could have broken 8 bil I think if I had suicided on stage 4 boss to go into 5 with bombs. I really wanted the clear though. The only pause was to take a picture at the end.

DOJBL 1-ALL. Holy shit.

Clearing Dai Ou Jou has been one of my goals since I started playing shooting games seriously. In a lot of ways I view DOJ as the game that got me back into STGs, so this is a huge personal milestone. Still a lot of things I'd like to do with the game, and I'm still working my way to a White Label clear, but damn that was satisfying.

Congrats!!!! been working on the same too. using type-B Exy (cause using low power shot or laser messes me up). currently can get to half way through stage 5. I generally have a good run till stage 4 boss, then its downhill. I use a lot of rank management, all extra bombs must go. only hyper in strategic places either for the two extends, or survival, and the cannons and rail section in stage 4. I find stage 5 pretty easy if you know what you're doing. but i just end up there with so less resources.

I will get a 1-ALL soon, but PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!!!!

Nice softdrink! I remember when I was struggling a lot with that game (Blex port), simply couldn't beat stage 5. Then I realized wait control was off... D'OH!

Inching towards 3 million in Gunbird 2. The thought that I might no miss no bomb the whole game has creeped into my head as well, but that's a long time off, if it ever happens at all.

Re: I DID IT

So, a couple weeks ago I had a weird craving to play some Touhou. This is highly unusual for me, since I've never really cared much for the games. On Monday, I started playing Imperishable Night... and cleared it on Normal that same day. This was surprisingly enjoyable, since the short turnaround helped me overlook the issues that I normally have with the game when I try to spend more time with it.

Then I had a crazy idea: What if I could clear another Touhou game in a day? And another? What if I could clear five games in five days?

I thought I would try clearing them in order, all on Normal, all as Reimu A, to make things even more controlled:

Imperishable Night
Phantasmagoria of Flower View
Mountain of Faith
Subterranean Animism
Undefined Fantastic Object

...

So I did. :D

I have the specific dates listed in my 1CC list, along with pics, and I hope to upload the replays at some point soon.

I have to say that I really didn't expect I'd be able to pull it off. Between classes, homework, errands, and moving back into my apartment, I didn't have a ton of free time this week. What's more, I don't have a strong background with any of these games-- I'd never cleared any of them before, and had only put any practice into IN prior to starting the challenge. But I'm glad I was able to stick with it. I had a lot of fun, since my exposure to each game was a successful and short-lived one. And I learned a lot about my habits when I try to cram practice into a short span of time. Getting the last clear (UFO) was an absolute nightmare; I kept ending runs literally seconds before the last form of the last boss went down. It was massively demoralizing, and I seriously considered giving up. Thanks to #shmups for letting me rant about that.

Suffice to say that I no longer have a craving to play any more Touhou.
