I have a sonic the hedgehog lcd game that still works, and I have a dead R-Zone, but not the eyesight destroying version, the handheld one, and yea it wasn't really all that great back in the day, but it had some interesting games! Sonic though has some really bad music even if the gameplay is solid.

Some of those classic Nintendo Game & Watch LCD games were re-released as cool mini keychain versions with the usual minature GB shell design motif + that slick Nintendo trademarked D-pad setup.

Somewhat topical: The presentation in Game & Watch Gallery 4 is super irritating.

Classic Manhole from Game & Watch Gallery 1 (left) and 4 (right).

You see that with the fourth collection, someone got the bright idea to put ghosted images of all the possible character positions on screen. They were kind of visible on the actual handhelds, but I don't remember them being this much of an eyesore.

Even weirder is that not all of the classic games in Gallery 4 do this. Five of the twenty are like in the previous titles, no ghosted images in sight.

And another thing...

Peach doing wimmin's work in Game & Watch Gallery 2 (left) and 4 (right).

Some of the modern versions are from previous collections, and while the redone graphics are technically more advanced, I think they lose the charm the 8-bit ones had.

Is it just me?

I still play my copy of the LCD version of Afterburner sometimes. It was one of my favorite past times during long road trips before I my parents got me a gameboy.

Grandstand used to make some cool LCD's.Anyone remember mini munchman, pocket scramble, swords n' serpents,Tarzan and crazy kong? I had a relative that used to work for them, whenever I used to see him,he used to bring over a load of games before they were availible for general release.they made quite a lot if stuff, but they were my favourite ones.

Everything Mario lost charm in N64 days, except maybe some GBC games (SMB Deluxe). In GBA days the disease struck handheld games. The lavishly animated menu backrdops in Game & Watch Gallery Advance are exceptionally pleasing to the eye for their time.

I didn't think it was necessary (and Manhole is definitely the worse offender for it in terms of looks), but I didn't mind the lcd placeholders being drawn. I didn't find the charm to be missing in the GBA remakes. I felt the graphics stayed pretty true to the previous collections, while keeping the gameplay intact. I do miss the updated Manhole, though.

One of the poorly frontlit GBA SP screen's redeeming features is how nice it looks in broad daylight (better than any backlit LCD I've seen outside). Perhaps that's where those Classic versions should be watched if you want them to resemble the real thing as closely as possible.
