Can the PS3 output 240p untouched? (For PS1 games)

Post by Tyrone Burton »

Trying to look this up for myself I found an answer from Fudoh by someone else who asked this question and the answer was

"since the games are software rendered and runnig in emulation, there no such thing as a 240p recognition, but to answer your question: 60fps 240p PS1 games are rendered correctly."

What did he mean by this? Only PS1 games that are 60fps are rendered correctly, or the PS3 ignores its resolution and renders it in 576i?

If the PS3 really can output 240p untouched, I'd think that using the PS3 for PS1 games as a transport to a Video Processor or other upscaling source would be best as its all digital with HDMI, and no DAC conversions.

480p is the lowest (digital) resolution supported on PS3 (480i over component). IIRC, PS1 games are forced into 480p and then upscaled at higher resolution settings.

as its all digital with HDMI, and no DAC conversions.
and not to forget: HDMI doesn't officially support 240p.

So the PS3 would have to do some scaling to the lowest resolution HDMI supports, and then output the signal?

I have personally tried, using SCART on a backwards compatible PS3 with a 240p PS2 game (Gradius III). It comes out in 480i.

Just forget about the PS3. Why would you want laggy emulation if you can play on a real PS1 or PS2 with the same quality ?
