What [not shmup] game are you playing now?

Anything from run & guns to modern RPGs, what else do you play?

Been playing a lot of Tecmo/NMK's Riot [ARC]

Interesting take on the shooting gallery game genre, that adds shooting "backwards". Really enjoying it, and it's not impossibly hard either (I think my first play-through with a credit-feed took me 5 credits). Damn fun too.

I wonder NMK's involvement though, it definitely doesn't really feel like an NMK game.

Hell yeah, finally managed to finish Kid Chameleon! For a long time I wanted this one under my belt.

This game is insanely long and hard, but thankfully you find tons of extra lives and continues to help you out. Although the last few levels are really tough and you might lose all your spare lives stuck in one of them. In my previous playthrough I lost like 35 lives on the last level before the final boss, that stage is almost something out of IWBTG.

If you want a challenge, check it out.

Been playing Planescape Torment. It's pretty mysterious, I really have no idea at this point how it is going to end or how far along I am in the game.

Tales of Xillia [PS3].

It's fucking pretty, or at least the environments [that first city is ethereal, and in general, environments have a nice painted feeling].
The character animations and lighting feel a bit off [what the fuck is with Milla's hair, it is fundamentally wrong in motion].

The combat is pretty fluid so far [it's up to Star Ocean 3 speed, which is nice], and I like how with the character switch and right stick, you can access an asston of your specials. 32 with a full party, if I did my math right [4 of the party member's own, and then 4 slots per-character on the right stick]. The link thing is neat too, although I'm wondering if there's any way to do a different combined arte with the same combination of characters.

The sudden switch to 60fps for battles is a little off-putting. I'm glad they run at 60, it just feels really odd when coming straight out of the 30fps overworld.

Also, it has that traditional Tales "the characters are distressingly likable"-ness about it so far [something that a lot of RPGs seem to ignore a bit]. The voice acting is pretty decent too [except for that crazy lady early on, I wanted to flay her voice actor].

Silly things: party died for essentially no reason early on [if my teammates would back off just so slightly, they wouldn't have been in the red constantly], spent ages trying to revive them [they kept dying immediately after] before getting killed [3 on one, fuck everything]. Then I noticed my tactics settings. Fucking ass.

And man, it would be really nice if any PS3 game actually supported Remote Play. It's not even a technical issue for most games, if I had a hacked PS3, I could just change the flag and with little exception, games would work. The lack of controls would be an issue though [why the PSP [and the Vita] doesn't just have two sets of L/R triggers and completely sidestep such an issue, the world will never know]...

Did you do this legit, or with Save States? Cause man, playing this straight through on a Genesis, or on an emulator with no Save States....wow, that's a tough one.

Final Fight is a really progressive game, the wheelchair dude is the city's ultimate crime boss! Not even the Burger King Kids Club was that edgy.

I wonder if there are any arcade games where the player character is in a wheelchair? For the last few years, I've had this idea for a badass 2P versus hack of Crack Down... a duel atop a skyscraper between two master killers: a blind guy with a bolt-action rifle, and a guy in a wheelchair armed with a katana and a landmine. Yep, did it legit, no savestates. It's been a while since I stopped using savestates completely, even for practice. They give you way too much of an unfair advantage IMO.

The game is really long, but like other games, just stick with it and learn how to beat each stage dying as little as possible. With each playthrough you'll get farther and farther, and soon enough you'll reach the end.

My copy of Umihara Kawase DS finally arrived today!
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

I have been marathoning 999 and Virtue's Last Reward for DS/3DS. Quite the interesting macabre mystery series (titled to number two so far), half story and half escape-the-room segments. I highly recommend them. See if you can escape alive!

I got a preview disk of Beyond: Two Souls (containing the first third of the game) a few days ago, and yet I keep playing boardgame remake Talisman Prologue on my iPhone. Haven't touched Beyond. Oh dear. What have I become?

EDIT: Until then I'd been nailing Rayman Legends and the Castle of Illusion remake. The former was insanely superb; the latter really fun when the collision detection wonkiness wasn't sending me insane!

Just barely scraped out a "1cc" in Battle Circuit, playing as Green. The only reason I made it through the final battle (which doesn't seem that hard, I just haven't played it much) is because I saved up and bought an extend. I didn't fight the real last boss, so it's hard for me to say I've really beaten the game, but technically this is my first 1cc.

House of the Dead: Overkill - what? (Completed now, on normal difficulty; no real desire to play again.)
Ghost Squad - yay (but short, and not a detailed game system. The paradise mode is fun but the animations throw me off since they're identical with those from before)
Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles - yay! (very detailed, occasionally a bit tedious, and the slapdash treatment of storylines - James Marcus' resurrection is treated much different and the best scene from RE0 was excised entirely)

Tales of Xillia [PS3].

Still having fun, but there are silly, silly issues.

* teammates standing there, doing fuck-all, getting killed [absolutely no reason why you should stand there unguarding and eat swinging arms repeatedly damnit, and why are you attacking during the active frames of that attack anyway [instead of the delightfully interruptable startup]]... At least I have some of their moves mapped to the right stick to force them out of their reverie...
* I'm pretty sure I set my auto-item usage levels so that my teammates would use them. So don't go rushing that enemy when you have <40% health without eating an Apple Gel, damnit. You were standing miles away from it before you decided "oh hey, I should fight".
* free run is a thing, but the AI almost never uses it to dodge, thus it gets hit by things that it really shouldn't even be in position for [was a big problem with the boss on the beach, the AI would very rarely run from or block the stab coming from the ground, ended up having to solo it for a while near the end because reviving my teammates would just waste my remaining life bottles]

I would have slightly less issue if I had another healer on my team other than Jude right now [which means I've been playing mostly as Milla anyway], but some of these are silly.

Maybe I should just pester my friends to play with me. Although, I will probably kick a fucker for opening up the menu while I'm fighting... damn.

Oh, and I'm playing on whatever the difficulty right above default is.

Been Playing Starfox Adventures - GC

I skipped this game back when it was released due to the excessive amount of hate levied at it for not being a true sequel to Starfox 64.

It's actually quite enjoyable, it's basically a Legend of Zelda game, starring Starfox. I'm only about 6-7 hours in. Yes, it's basically Dinosaur Planet with the Starfox Cast pasted in, yes the Arwing sequences are a cruel tease of what could have been, yes it looks/feels kind of like an N64 game, yes the voice acting borders on grating, and yes, lack of dual stick controls hurt it somewhat. (C'mon even in 2002 dual stick controls were standard in this type of game...)

But it has that quality of "just another 20 minutes" when you're playing it, it's not that hard, but it is fun. Some of the particle and lighting effects still look good today. Great art design too.

There are a few section tho that I had to consult a guide as I just didn't clue in to how the 'puzzle' worked. But I could just be a moron too....

Basically - if you like Zelda style games, you'll probably like this.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also recently completed Omega Boost - PS1

A technically impressive game that was waaaaaaay too hard. Plus the box art promised a Static-X soundtrack, which is only in the menu's.... bleh.
Graphics are pretty great for the time, controls well, and the concept was kinda neat. Probably won't ever play it again however.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Street Fighter Alpha 2 - Saturn

My favourite SF game ever, played on the system with the best gamepad ever. I'll probably never stop playing this game. I love the art, the music, mechanics, to me it's the perfect fighting game.

Just finished Tomb Raider (the one that came out recently - cheers spadgy). It's the first Tomb Raider game I've played and it was pretty damn good. Really solid gameplay plus a few cool puzzles.

This game succeeds in all the ways RE6 wanted to but failed miserably at. I kept having that thought whilst playing it, particularly with how you control Lara. Shame it didn't have zombies in it.

Previously I'd played through The Last of Us. At first I was sceptical of all the praise, and it took a few hours to get in to and play properly. By the end I didn't want it to end.

As great as it is I think it's a bad thing for the games industry. Generally I can't stick "emotion" in games, or storytelling or any other crap that gets in the way of playing the thing. But for once it actually works. Who knew?

Next on the list is a weird hack of Mario Kart Wii with over 100 tracks - sounds good.

I felt very similar. A very good example of something I'm not really interest in as part of my gaming hobby. I'd also like less emotion in real life.

Ridge Racer Revolution [PS1].

Was playing it in my PS2, and noticed a hell of a lot of slowdown at certain parts. Is there significant slowdown when running on a PS1?
I was playing it on my PS3 earlier, and noticed no such thing [even with 4 cars on screen, but that's probably due to emulation differences than anything else].

Also, the extra courses bother the hell out of me, although that's entirely because I don't have them memorized backwards.

I love how stylish this game looks, it's so bold with colors and unshaded polygons, and even though everything is made of so few polys, it looks nice. The only thing that really bothers me are the gaps between polys that seems to be a characteristic trait of PS1 games...
