Atari Jaguar shmups
Atari Jaguar shmups
has anyone played any of them? opinions? I used to have a jaguar, Alien vs Predator is still one of my all time favorite games. some of the shmups were Raiden, Protector, defender, Tempest 2000(probably most famous Jag game).
I'm a huge Atari fan(boy). I have Raiden, Trevor McFur, and Tempest 2000 for my Jag. I think Raiden is awesome, but I can't really compare it to the arcade version, as I only recently got the Raiden Project for PSX and haven't had time to play it. Basically it's very playable, but your ship moves a little too slowly. There was some good discussion on the game in this thread: http://forum.shmups.com/forum/viewtopic ... den+jaguar.
Trevor McFur is really not worth hunting down, IMO. There is no consideration whatsoever given to Enemy Placement, and that is one of the most important aspects of a shooter. They just chuck all sorts of crap at you, and if you have really good reflexes, you do okay. The powerups are widely varied, but still nothing too new. There is no music past the title screen, to my knowledge. It's really just a boring, uninspired low budget shooter. Nothing more.
Tempest 2000 is fantastic, as most who've played it will admit. I don't really consider it a shmup, but I guess some people do. My problem with it is that I got bored/pwnd around level 80, and there are over 100 levels AFAIK. But it's always fun to fire it up for an hour or two and blast through the first 35 levels on one credit.

The best Jag shmup you've never played...
Shame the rumor about the Dreamcast release wasn't happening, either.

I remember Trevor McFur, besides being a (IMO horrendous) shmup with some of the most bland design ever, t was the future super next generation game featured in all the tv commercials and was even the pack-in game for a bit. Really bizarre given the game's clearly low production values and development time as PFG 9000 pointed out.
Tempest 2000 is a must, there's a Defender on there as well that's decent. Avoid the Missile Command 3D though.
That Raiden port is great stuff though if you ask me.

the best game overall was definitely Alien vs Predator, it is still the best AvP game to date with it's open ended Metroidy design:

AvP does indeed rock. I don't mean to bash the game, but I don't think it's aged well. It completely blew me away the first time I saw screens (in the October 1993 issue of Gamepro, IIRC), and again when I first played it a few years later. However, now when I pick it up and turn it on, it always shocks me how horrible the framerate is. It's just so...jerky.
Also, it never made any sense to hear the Predator whispering "Anytime," "Over here," and "Come on." in the context of this game. In the first movie, the Predator was attempting to replicate what he heard from the humans' speech, without understanding what exactly he was saying, in an attempt to lure them closer. In the game it makes no sense to use these same clips again, because it's too much of a stretch to think that these new predators learned the exact same limited vocabulary in their experiences with humans. It's a very minor complaint, but I don't think Rebellion understood the concept behind that part of the film.
Anyway, AvP is great, it has some of the very best atmosphere I've ever experienced in gaming. I highly recomment that any of you give it a shot if you have the means. I believe it does run on emu if you don't have access to the original cart & console. Just try to keep in mind the time it came out, and judge it accordingly (shmuppers shouldn't have any trouble with that part).

Yeah I mean I still play Darwin 4078 or whatever so AvP is pretty easy to get into.
Also, I'd say Rebellion definitely learned from the experience, as the AvP they made for the PC is still one of the most intense FPS experiences I've ever gone through. That's another one EVERYONE should play. Graphics have actually aged pretty well too since the game is so dark. The vision modes for the different characters are implemented perfectly and the difficulty is mercilessly accurate to the source material (i.e., it's pretty easy when you're a Predator
).
AvP2 added in some awesome stuff but the overall game is much worse, figures since Rebellion didn't make it.
The first AvP PC game can be had for like $10 USD new if even that much. If it's the Gold version it comes with multiplayer levels based on the Nostromo and some other famous locations from the movies.
Soundtrack is nice too, it's all original music that's very very heavily inspired by the soundtracks for Aliens, Alien 3, and Predator 2. But usually I just pop in my Aliens Deluxe Soundtrack CD and it'll take the tracks straight from that instead.

I definitely prefer the AvP on the Jaguar versus the PC, since game play is non linear, you have a huge marine vessel and the Predator and Alien ships to explore. and where the creatures/marines appear is random every time you play. the Predator weapons rock too, and i like how you earn the pred's weapons based on your honorable kills.
I loved AvP on the Jag, it was the first FPS I ever played other than Wolfenstein. The graphics/atmosphere blew me away. I remember when me and my cousin were playing it quite late at night with the lights out, then we heard the Predators' clicking sound for the first time - it sent shivers down my spine.
Defender 2000, like Tempest 2000 had a few different versions on the cart, with a trippy 'plus' version with so called argo-vision or something, as Minter called it.
There was also Protector (Defender clone) but I never played it.
Also, did anyone own/play Iron Soldier 2? I liked that.

Same here Pshooter, I liked how they put that back in AvP2 on the PC. You'd run into other Predators and everything.
I really wish Rebellion would do another AvP game, simply because at this point enough developers have worked with the franchise that they could really iron out all the little flaws in each of them and make an all around fantastic game.
I never played Iron Soldier 2. Loved the original, though I remember Iron Soldier 3 on the PSX being the definition of unenjoyable.

Iron Soldier 2 is like Iron Soldier 1, but with better graphics (more texture mapping), new weapons and new enemies. It was also a CD game, which helped justify the £150 I spent on the 'toilet seat' drive.
I never played IS3, but by then I had discovered Armored Core...

here's some AvP Jaguar speed run videos!! (i am downloading right now, so i'm not sure if they work **crosses fingers**)
**EDIT: THEY WORK, MY GOD THIS GAME STILL LOOKS DAMN GOOD. I'M GOING TO HAVE TO TRACK DOWN A JAG! there are three different qualities for the movies, and you need DIVX.

fire up alien trilogy for psx/sat and cut the framrate in half <- thats what it looks like.captain ahar wrote:anyone have any movies of AvP? i've always wanted to see it
if you want a good FPS for the jag you should pick up wolfenstein, best version.
ED: i see some people praising raiden here, are you on crack!!??
the jag port of raiden is absoluteley atrocious, its possibly the worst console port ever made. even the snes/md versions of raiden rock the shit out of the jag one

the destruction of everything, is the beginning of something new. your whole world is on fire, and soon, you'll be too..
The PSX/Saturn Alien games look horrible compared to the Jag version. The aliens don't even resemble their movie counterparts. And the framerate is better than the Jag game, but it's still far from perfect. And even if it was, there is far more in the Jag version that trounces the others. All IMO, of course, but there certainly seems to be enough support for Jag AvP here.sven666 wrote:fire up alien trilogy for psx/sat and cut the framrate in half <- thats what it looks like.

Anyway, Wolfenstein 3D Jag is awesome too. It's still Wolfenstein, with the untextured ceilings and tile-based level designs, but it has new sprites and textures and weapons and everything. It's sorta the Doom 64 of the Wolfenstein series, though maybe not as much of a leap over its predecessors.
What exactly is wrong with the Jag port? I know it's a little slower than the others, but it's very playable, and incredibly fun. I haven't 1cc'd it yet, but I'm on my way. The level designs are pretty faithful to the originals, as I understand it. I'll definitely have to play the PSX version this weekend, so that I can compare them accurately. But I've heard from several Raiden fans that the Jag version is fairly close to the original. And your complaints certainly can't be gameplay-related (can they?).ED: i see some people praising raiden here, are you on crack!!??

To say that the SNES version "rocks the shit out of the jag one" is obviously incorrect. The levels are the same, but the SNES one is ugly, jerky, and has far too much slowdown.
i actually think alien trilogy is a great game, and i do think the two are fairly similar gameplay and graphics wise, however there is no denying AvP doesnt flow quite as well.
ive played many raiden ports (and i have the PCB) and i still think the jag version is by far the worst, it doesnt look good and it runs poorly.
but hey if you like it - more power to ya.
(argueing our opinions is futile

I would say that AvP's gameplay blows away Alien Trilogy's. I loved Alien Trilogy when it came out, and it's not a bad game, but the level design is really bland and doesn't hold up at all. AvP feels more like a complete experience.
The first three Alien movies turned out a surprisingly large amount of great video games. Shame the Predator only has the same luck when combined with them, as it has such potential.
The sound in Raiden Trad is such a let down given how awesome the SNES' sound can be.

yeah, they really blew it on Predator: Concret Jungle. It should have been a wide open city like Spiderman 2, where you could prowl the streets and shed some blood. AvP on the Jag is the only Predator game so far where you feel like your stalking invisible and hunting people.Neo Rasa wrote:I would say that AvP's gameplay blows away Alien Trilogy's. meh, i've played AvP on the PC, way too many keys to memorize, just not fun like the Jag version..Neo Rasa wrote:AvP2's Predator game has its moments if you haven't tried that one yet.
Average game overall though. The marine/Alien/Predator games all start off brilliantly and then quickly become tired garbage.

Ironic given the, ahem, interesting design of the Jaguar controller.
Who am I kidding I love the damn thing.
But to be honest, the dead simple nature of the controls is one of the reasons Rebellions AvP1 on the PC is so awesome. It's very easy to get into.
AvP2 is where the controls fall apart. They take a lot of the cool stuff from the original and make them into useless gimmicks while also assinging everything its own key in a dumb way.
AvP1 though, the Alien game alone is worth the price of admission. Rebellion even gives you this 180 degree stretched fisheye vision, it's more convincing than watching the actual first person Alien footage in Alien 3!
The enemy placement is randomized too in an interesting way. The "patrol" patterns for the enemies never change, but their starting position (and their number when human enemies are involved) change slightly each time you load a game up. The wall climbing is very fluid too, and I love the shock factor the humans have. Like if you hang over the end of a corridor and drop down right behind a guy that walks through he'll turn around and freak out for just long enough for you to eviscerate him. Then you gain life from attacking human corpses as usual.
I don't know, I hold both of Rebellion's games in equal regard at this point. AvP2 is weak, Alien Trilogy's gameplay really hasn't aged well.
Alien 3 on the SNES I'll always love, same with Konami's Aliens arcade game and the blatant Aliens ripoff SNK did, SAR: Search and Rescue.
And man Alien 3: The Gun in the arcades, God bless SEGA gun games. The fact that the controller for the game is an accurately proportioned pulse rifle like in Aliens alone earns it my respect. I think I like it more than that awesome T2 arcade game.

This got a pretty average arcade release and yeah, it's AWESOME. Basically that T2 arcade game only with Alien 3 backgrounds/enemies. Cool thing is that I've only ever seen it in the form of one of those big fifty-something inch cabinets with the guns mounted a good two feet on front of it. It ate many of my quarters back in the day.PFG 9000 wrote:I have never heard of this before. Was this game fairly rare? Tons of visual content digitized straight from the movie, lots of nice 2D stuff and scaling to imitate walking forward/turning around fast/etc. as well. It's even got a catchy soundtrack. There's also a ton of very, very good sprite artwork done to seemlessly blend in with the digitized stuff.

MAME runs it, though last I checked I think only DOS MAME ran it? Either way, definitely check this out.

has anyone played Protector SE or SKyhammer? these are two games made after the Jaguar died, by Songbird Progductions. They are supposed to be two of the best games for the jag, and really show what the hardware was capable of (like AvP did). Songbird are a godsend for Jag fans, as they continue to make games. on September 2005 they released Total Carnage:
