I was at my local Target store yesterday (11/10/05-Thursday) and was browsing around. Upon encountering a Christmas novelty gift aisle, I noticed some very colorful & eyecatchy neon mini keychain LCD type of games for sale from manufacturer, Techno Source. Upon closer inspection, they were priced at a cheap-ass $1.99 USD. So I further checked around to see what LCD games were available for purchase.
Found two LCD games worth getting: Pinball and Alien Intruder...
Alien Intruder features a true Tate screen setup and features similiar gameplay akin to the classic Galaxian/Galaga/Space Invaders gameplay. But goes one step further, it adds extra upgradeable firepower for more powerful shots. The Techno Source keychain LCD games are powered by two LR44 type of button cell batteries & a pair of them are included in every keychain LCD game you buy.
I suppose if Techno Source really wanted to give it's Alien Intruder LCD game the full portable Tabletop game treatment (reminscent of the early 1980's Tabletop electronic games from that era from Tomy, Coleco, Entex, Bandai, Nintendo, etc. that used the VFIP display-type technology), it would rather feature cool retro-stylish "Vacuum Florescent Illuminated Panel" (VFIP) type of graphics as method of display and be in full-color as well! Add a good solid four-way joystick and fire button...and you'd have a kick-ass modern-day retro "VFIP" based tabletop shmup game! Provide some killer stereo BGM tunes along with updated sound + cool flashing lighting effects...now things are really smoking and updated with 21st century manufacturing ingenuity & design!
Suppose if someone were to design a cool "retro" VFIP-based tabletop shmup game with a minimalistic artistic design and presented in a Tate or horizontal screen orientation...wouldn't you want to buy such a cool modern-day tabletop electronic shmup game infused with techno-visual appealling technology? I know I would. But the real question is: how much would someone be willing to pay for such a tabletop shmup game (if it were mass-produced or perhaps released in limited numbers for collectibility purposes).
I like how there is a protective static-cling plastic film cover that comes adhered to the LCD screen (but is easily removable) for posterity. Most mini LCD based games made today don't have that feature.
I have a cool Namcot produced keychain mini LCD game of Galaxian that I got from Japan back in early 2000. It features some cool "multi-layered" LCD display effects since the actual Galaxian LCD game only has one screen...it's a very high-tech LCD display screen (capable of displaying several LCD picture elements at the same time but on different layers). Very cool & kawaii (Japanese for "cute") mini shmup LCD game to play with!
