Favorite slasher/horror movies

Dario Argento hasn't aged well. His last few films are, to put it gently, not good enough, to the point that most critics think he depressed Italian horror as a whole (if the master failed, why should someone else's attempt at making a horror movie be greenlighted?).
Among recent Italian horror films, the only recommendations that come to mind are:

• Shadow by Federico Zampaglione, a fairly traditional exploitation plot with a nice atmosphere (beautiful hills and forests) and the mandatory funny moments ("I'm afraid we are lost in the woods!" "Yes, we are, let's split!").
• Just about anything by Manetti Bros., particularly Zora the Vampire (humorous vampire story, with an amazing hip hop soundtrack), Paura 3D (inept victims slasher, with interesting characters and a perverted twist ending) and The Arrival of Wang (science fiction in name only: it starts tense, grows violent and scary, and ends badly).
• The Butterfly Room by Jonathan Zarantonello, a well made deliberate throwback to the golden age of Dario Argento and Lucio Fulci, featuring both a serial killer and a really evil villain. Curiously filmed in Los Angeles.

I like horror movies a lot

I agree with nearly everything already mentioned in this thread.
My personal favourite from Argento is Opera - the raven shot in the Opera is awesome.

Yeah, I sadly put off Argento years ago after viewing his Do You Like Hitchcock? Such derivative garbage! What attempts at being a homage to Hitchcock and Rear Window comes off as extremely amateurish and bland. Much like some of DePalma's thrillers. Not trying to stir the kettle... or am I!?

Same goes for most of the horror crowd. I can't remember the last time I looked at Romero, Carpenter, Craven, Raimi, and the rest of the American lot. Cronenberg drastically changed style, but at least he still can make a decent film.

I love Martin. I sadly don't own a copy anymore. I wound up giving it to a friend to have Romero and Savini sign it at a convention. At least it went to a good home, I suppose. I also dig Near Dark and Eraserhead quite a bit, although I prefer other Lynch films. I've owned The Prowler since it's been released, yet I still haven't watched it. Fairly typical of my bad habits, though.

One of my favorites that I haven't seen get much love is The Fourth Kind. For some reason it really struck me down deep. Maybe because you never see the torture scenes, but damn, the first time I saw it it stuck with me for a solid week.

V/H/S was actually quite good, although some of the scenes were scarier than others. The first one in particular was quite freaky. I wasn't too interested until I read system11's review. Worth a watch for sure.

I've been thinking about my answer for this thread for a few days, and I think my all time favorite horror flick has to be Dawn of the Dead(original version), I still watch that at least once a month and have for years. The extended version is awesome, adds a bunch of scenes that flesh out the characters a bit more, plus more gore/action.

Still trying to narrow down to my favorite slasher flick.

I throughly enjoyed watching all 26 film shorts in the anthology series that's known as "The ABC's of Death" on Blu-Ray format. There are some cool shorts in it worth viewing more than once, especially the shorts of "H is For Hydro-Electric Diffusion" and "V is For Vagitus" with it's superb sci-fi vibe -- the pacing and editing is quite stellar as well (the full-auto machine gun used on the huge armored 'VPD' mecha unit prop is a Hasbro Vulcan dart machine gun spray painted black).

Yeah, watching V/H/S was an interesting romp with using the ol' obsolete VHS medium format...I'm surprised that you can still find brand new blank recordable VHS tapes at the local Target these days -- a few years back they stopped carrying/selling them but due to customer demand, Target brought them back for sale. There's the sequel of V/H/S 2 to check out as well.

Not seen enough horror movies, but there are some that really stuck with me.
Pulse(original verison) scared the crap out of me and I'm probably the only one who got scared by that.
Most of the Friday the 13th movies are worth a watch, save for the first one.
The Heirloom is a pretty darn good ghost horror movie to watch. Some of the deaths where just unexpected!
So yea, there's my short list of horror I've managed to actually sit through and watch.
