The EU has officially jumped the shark - speed limits?

Post by brentsg »

http://www.dailytech.com/Report+EU+Prop ... e33303.htm
Reportedly the EC approached Mr. McLoughlin with a pending proposal that sought to use an Intelligent Speed Adaptation (ISA) scheme to prevent any new vehicles sold in the EU from going over 70 miles per hour. The EC officials argued that the proposal was necessary to curb the over 30,000 drivers who die each year on Europe's streets.

Never understood why they make cars that can go so much faster than the official speed limits.

Cuz in Germany we don't have speed limits on the highways!

So yeah, that proposal isn't going to go over well here, I'm afraid.

Oh ok, before reading the article I thought maybe they'd be putting speed restrictors on engines (which wouldn't make a huge difference to speeding because people already into illegal car mods would be able to remove them easily) or placing stricter regulations on what constitutes a road legal engine (which wouldn't work because almost all current cars would be deemed defectable) but they're using ISA, which is from what I understand a GPS system that actively stops drivers from exceeding the speed limit. Hmmn, this would have to be able to be temporarily disabled so that drivers could take their road car to a track on weekends (because not everyone who likes racing can afford their own race car). I believe there are versions of ISA that adjust the car's top speed relative to the speed limit where the car is driving (so all speed restrictions would automatically turn off once you started driving somewhere that didn't have a speed limit, such as a German highway or a private road). That's at least slightly sensible.

70m p/h top speed all over Europe is just retarded though. Besides all the obvious issues, this would impact the (high-end) European car industry pretty badly, at least in terms of sales within Europe. Who the fuck is going to buy a Ferrari when its' top speed is the same as a fuckin' Kia Rio, lol.

Oh yeah, it's totally beyond me. I mean, why would anyone want to go faster than the speed limit? What could be fun or exciting about putting an engine in a giant coke-can with wheels, and speeding through tracks and roads at hundreds of kilometers per hour, pushing yourself to take corners as fast as you can - meanwhile, if you mess up you could DIE. Doesn't sound the slightest bit thrilling, does it? I might go sit down and play some video games instead.

Stupid to drive like that on a (non-closed) road of course, but COME ON DUDE.

Germany won't let it happen anyway. Our government stopped plans to introduce regulations for the reduction of carbon monoxide emmissions of newly built motors to protect our car industry, and this new plan sounds a lot worse than that.
