Thanks so much Paradroid, that's very useful. I'm the guy who as posted a couple of times recently on your excellent blog on the e3000 page.

I have finally decided on the E3000 chassis - and the extron sounds perfect! Can it correct left RGB shift with a horizontal position control as well? Apparently I will need a sync strike as well if I want to use My console's RGB scart output?

I have a couple of questions:

What is the best extron unit to get?

And also, of the e3000 tubes, is the the 68cm super flatline tube superior to the 63cm blackline S tube? I want to get the best, but if they're as good as each other I might go for a smaller blackline S. Otherwise, I would love to get a Calida 5072 ;)

Yeah, sorry it took me a while to respond to some of your questions... busy times.

The E3000 has a dedicated RGB horizontal shift setting in the Service Menu. Very handy! The Extron can also sort it. I don't know about connecting an N64. Did you check out Alex's PDF file on my blog? He seemed to have it figured.

I don't know about the "best", but the unit I bought is pretty sweet.

I personally prefer the A66EAK tubes (Contur, CT1170, etc.) whereas my mate Rob (mentioned earlier in this thread) prefers the A68ESF tubes. The 68 is flatter but the 66 always produced better geometry in my experience.

Both have great colour and contrast (as long as you find a later model A66EAK but that should come standard with a Loewe).

Thanks for that - no worries, your time is very appreciated.

I'm definitely going to get one these Extrons - the scanline softening RGB overdirive sounds something I would definitely want :)

Also, geometry is really important to me so from your post, I'll probably end up taking your suggestion and going with the A66EAK tube Loewes.

In your blog, you say that the Conturs & CT1170's A66EAKs are smaller than the 68cm A68ESFs - can I ask what size they are?

This would be great for me as I prefer a TV closer to 25 inches.

Cheers

Steer clear of the Philips ESF tubes. They're known (among TV techs) for their very high failure rate.

OK so I just saw the the contur 1470 is 70cm. I've noticed something about the E3000 models, including the 1470 - there seems to be 3 other closely related versions: the 'S' version and the '63' version. So additionally to the contur 1470 there is a 1470s, a 1463 and a 1463s.

Does anyone know what these are? I'm guessing that the '63' means that the TV has a smaller screen (not sure about this) but I haven't got a clue about the S

Also If the 1463 version is a smaller version of the 1470 then would it be guaranteed to have the high screen quality of the 1470?

63, 70, 72 in TV codes usually refer to the size in centimeters of the faceplate diagonal so:

63cm = 25" (59cm viewable)
70cm = 28" (66cm viewable)
72cm = 29" (68cm viewable)

Thanks for that, as I thought... So the crucial question for me (if I were to go for my preferred 63cm size) is:

Would the quality of the screen be consistent across these sizes?, i.e. would the 1473 be as good as the 1470?
