Experience with Twin Famicom and DVDO VP30?

Post by flip »

So I finally got a nice TV and have all my old consoles running through a DVDO VP30, with an added SLG3000 for scanline goodness. All of my consoles output RGB except the Twin Famicom, and this is where my only problem lies. I do get a picture using composite video, but it's shaky - it pulses about once per second - difficult to describe. I've tried using the HDMI out instead of BNC and unlocking the framerate, same thing. If I connect the Twin Famicom directly to my TV though, the problem's gone, but then I can't have my scanlines and other benefits of the VP30.

Any suggestions? Anyone got experience using a Twin Famicom with a VP30? I know their comb filters are mediocre at best, but bad enough to cause serious issues like this?

I'm surprised that unlocking the output doesn't help. It should, as should enabling the VCR mode in the input settings, but depending on your display, this might totally screw up the scrolling.

On my setup (Sony TV) I was not able to get a Famicom smoothly running on a VP30.

Hm, I also have a Sony (40E4000). Wonder if the Twin Famicom's composite signal is somewhat special or if the DVDO just sucks so much with composite. I think VCR is set to 'Auto', will try turning it on. (edit: doesn't change anything. On closer inspection the picture seems to be a bit less shaky with unlocked 60Hz, but not really great)
Btw does the DVDO's sound output via HDMI work on your Sony? Mine says it's an incompatible audio signal. No big problem since the Sony has an additional audio in (headphone jack) for one of its HDMI ports, but still weird, since it worked on my other LCD screen (a cheap AOC monitor).

Do you have a ABT102 installed ?

something about Nintendo. Don't ask....

don't remember, sorry. I've gone through so many processors (in general and DVDO in particular).

Yes, I've got the ABT102 installed.

The lack of RGB on the (non-rare) Famicom models and of a cheap/simple mod to solve this problem is really annoying.

If you feel like it, you could try to remove the ABT102 for a little test run. It should increase 240p compatibility massively.

That's interesting. Though you'd trade the quick processing of the Game Modes, right? I might do that on a boring weekend. With the universal PPU in the works, who knows, maybe there will be a RGB mod for my Twin Fami in the future.

Just wanted to confirm my VP30 & Sony TV also had this problem from time to time. Using a Sony TV as well, but I just route the sound directly to an amp nowadays. Want to remember reading somewhere that it wasn't a totally unusual thing to happen.

Would recommend getting the audio separately from the VP30 instead.
