Recommended Anime/Manga?

I'm currently watching FLCL (among a ridiculous amount of others anime), I did a quick search on the forum to see if people here seemed to enjoy it but I saw mostly negative things about it.
Personally its really starting to grow on me, I think it has a great style and it's tremendous fun to watch.
Also watched Steins;Gate last week, really liked that one. Maybe I'm just more into mainstream anime...

I'm a fan of FLCL, although it's probably my least favorite Gainax production, excluding the new Evangelion reboots. FLCL is pretty funny, but it tries to be a little zany for its own good at times. Probably my only gripe, albeit a minor one.

Seeing The Pillows live is one of my cherished memories.

FLCL is an odd one. Despite enjoying its absurdity and self-referencing of the genre, I found the pace to be a little too relentless to the point of almost being senseless.
I liked FLCLs ability to change its art and animation direction on a whim to suit any scene GAINAX deemed fit, but again that ever-changing style never gave the show an opportunity to sit a meld. At least that’s how I felt anyway.
Episode 6 was definitely my favourite as it starts in a slow and deliberate fashion, giving the viewer a much needed breather before the final climatic set of scenes, calm before the storm if you will.
I also have a few other small grievances with it, such as the commonplace character archetypes and general themes throughout but nothing too major. It seems to be a show that grows on you the more times you watch it I think.
I certainly don’t hate it yet given the choice I’d probably prefer to watch something from the GAINAX of old, like Wings of Honneamise or the original Gunbuster.

I recommend giving Dead Leaves a watch to anyone who enjoyed FLCL as it is every bit as ludicrous and unyielding as that is.

Yeah, Dead Leaves is amazing in much the same ways as FLCL Also has a kickass soundtrack too

so I have heard. Still yet to see it myself but very much enjoyed Kaiba, so I have high hopes for it when I inevitably get 'round to it.

I've heard a lot about Dead Leaves but I can't find it anywhere (with subs anyway). Mind Game sounds interesting too, definitly something I'd like to see.
Quick question, what would be the more fucked up anime I could see ?
I love disturbing cinema and music and last month I looked around for anime that would fit in this category. Found a lot of clean gore and mildly shocking ones, but is that really the best they can do ?

People suggested stuff like Gantz or Elfen Lied, but I'd like something more rough looking.

Sorry for the double post but regarding Junji Ito I think I would like what he does very much as I love these body transformation thematics and guro artwork in general, but I can't imagine myself reading them on a computer screen so as long as I won't have the originals I guess I'll have to wait.

Read Azumi 1-5. Pretty good, shocking from early on. However the last chapter stretched the "innocent killing machines from Neverland" angle's credibility a bit too far. Naivety about the birds and bees is endearing to a point, but sending the most skilled of your prized hand-reared assassins, an attractive young girl, into a den of thugs on recon? Ok... then she gets gang-raped, or would have been if not for a decent passerby's intervention, because Grandpa didn't explain the evil men they're out to exterminate will do this to vulnerable females and she genuinely had no idea why these leering ronin were encircling her on a deserted forest path. And she's also been told to never-ever-ever use her lethal abilities outside of "missions." -_- It just makes the heretofore ruthlessly efficient Gramps look as clueless about the real world as his charges.

Still interested to see the next few chapters, at least - the chapter's conclusion is a good dramatic setup, though I hope it's not just a re-run of the earlier mission.

Sounds good anyway but I can't find any translation for sale. I was thinking about maybe completing my (very weak) my manga collection with Tomie and some others manga, but if this one isn't available would you recommend downloading it ?

That's the manga I mean, but nope - I've only read Vol.1 Chapters 1-5 (two chapters to go). That's as far as the translation I'm reading has released.

I proper liked FLCL - though nowhere near as much as Gunbuster. TTGL or NGE.

well I was being lazy - I probably should have said 'Gurren Lagann' for TTGL :p.

Gunbuster OVAs are sublime, and don't listen to anyone telling you otherwise.

Of course beeing the lazy fuck that I am I gave up almost instantaneously but I'm wondering if any of you have either done the same or feels that watching anime has helped them to somewhat understanding the language.
I've learned english on my own and although I'm not very good at it I'd seriously love to do the same with japanese...

As someone who learned to speak Japanese and also watches a ton of anime, my answer is no, you cannot learn Japanese by watching anime. It's helpful to watch it often simply because you get a lot of listening practice which you will definitely need, but it is only one small piece of a very complex puzzle. You have to study grammar and vocabulary, there's no way around it. Also in my case I didn't really get to a point where I could speak well until I had regular conversation partner (about 2-3 hours per week of straight conversation, not classes). And, before I began that I had to learn the basics of grammar which was time consuming. I don't believe you can just absorb a language, especially not by passively watching TV.

Oh, yeah, I'm not talking about fully learning the language obviously. The way I saw it at the time was that it would help me create patterns with phrase structures and vocabulary and along with studiying grammar could be a good start.
I was taught english at school but never really cared and got out of there with very little understanding of the language beyond some very basic phrases structures. Then I learned it on my own by watching movies, documentaries and such...
My original goal was to do the same with japanese (knowingly that it would be a lot longer)

But I'm sure someone with a really good understanding of grammar in general could get pretty far by watching anime only though.

just finished rewatching Gurren Lagann - just well just amaze, I certainly enjoyed it more now that I've watched more mecha (when I first watched it I had only seen 0079 and NGE o_O ).

also loved the Ashita No Joe influences in it, in fact I think there was a 'cross-counter' scene early on .

Yuyu Hakusho is fun for what it is, but it honestly feels a little like Dragon Ball Z meets Ghostbusters.

And then the entire second half of the series is a tournament arc, IIRC. I remember that being something that killed my enthusiasm.
