PS2, Gamcube XRGB Mini

Post by ijed »

I have this nice HDTV in my bedroom although my older consoles like ps2 and gamcube that I would like to play look very pixelated and blurry on it. Would the XRGB-Mini make it look like it would on a crt tv? I'm new to this type of hardware. Thanks in advance. I was looking into a DVDO Edge although that has a load of input lag introduced and from what I've read the gamemode does not do a very good job.

not this easy to answer: while you can make 240p games look very much like a CRT on a HDTV, it's rather different with 480i and 480p games. The interlaced look of 480i on a CRT is hard to simulate and the Framemeister doesn't even try, instead you get very nice deinterlacing and upscaling suited for video game graphics. Both systems will certainly look better than they do now. If your interest in gaming is concentrated on non-2D PS2 games and GameCube in General the DVDO Edge is a valid option.

My problem is that the DVDO Edge will only be worth it if gamemode is off and that introduces a large amount of input lag. How is the upscaling with xrgb-mini?

Gamemode on the Edge does not influence quality on 480p sources and I would assume that many of your Cube games output in 480p and at least a part your PS2 library. The Mini will be fine as well, but it only has one component input (via D-Terminal connector) and your PS2 will exhibit at least some amount of video noise using component. The Edge's A/D and filter stage is just better. Just seems weird to see somebody buying a Mini without his main focus being 240p games.
