Saturn S-Video (price check thread?)

How much should I pay for a Saturn S-Video cable (or component if it's possible)? I see a bunch on Amazon and eBay, but they're all $50 or so. What's the scoop here?

Retro Console Accessories typically sells Saturn PAL/NTSC, S-Video/RGB (Euro/Jpn) SCART(with/without Audio RCA cinch connectors) for $17-25. Currently there aren't any but you could ask when/if she intends to make some more.

I'm not aware of a component cable for Sega Saturn - basically you would take the RGB (SCART) signal and put it through a competent video processor.

Hmm an S-Video one, not composite? I'm also in the US so I can't make easy use of SCART.

I got one for $7 a few years ago, I guess they've gone up since.

It's easy to make an RGB cable for one though, and send it through a VGA to Component converter.

While there are some VGA monitors that do accept 15kHz RGB, many devices with a VGA input will not accept 15kHz RGB - typically you would need something like a GBS-8200/GBS-8220 just for that.

Not sure why you're posting scalers. All that's needed is colorspace conversion. The audio authority 9A60 does a great job. It's all analog conversion, so zero lag if you're playing on a CRT.

You might have to troll ebay for a while though to get a good price. Others transcoders might work, but I've confirmed the audio authority.

Because your initial statement was an overgeneralization.

It's easy to make an RGB cable for one though, and send it through a VGA to Component converter.

• It says "converter", not "transcoder" which makes a difference.
• A generic "VGA to Component converter" doesn't have to support anything below 640x480x16 - so 240p (320x240) is out of spec. Also interlaced signals (480i) are also out of spec - though I'm not sure whether there is any Saturn 480i material over RGB.
• Constraining ourselves instead to a "transcoder" we will end up with 240p (sometimes possibly 480i - though again I'm not sure if that is even possible on a Saturn) on the component end. The OP asked about S-video or component cables - inputs which are typically found on late model CRT or early model LCD TVs. My KV-27FS100 CRT doesn't support 240p on component, neither does my Aquos LC-26D43U - which is pretty typical for that class of equipment where the lowest common denominator is 480i or 480p (if you are lucky).
• Granted a GBS8200/GBS8220 doesn't help you if you can only tolerate 480i on your component input. But for a typical LCD TV it would bring the signal up to 640x480 that can then be input into a 9A60(A) transcoder to deliver 480p on the component input.

actually most transcoders don't care and it's just a matter of how to get the signal in there and which sync signals are accepted. Micomsoft, Crescendo Systems, Audio Authority, Burosch Con-1 - they all accept 15khz signals. Doesn't even matter if progressive or interlaced. And yes, there are certain situations in which a Saturn does output 480i. Battle Garegga's menu or Radiant's title screen for example.
