Horizontal bullet hells?

Post by dark »

When I think of horizontal bullet hell style shmups, I can only think of maybe two: Progear and Akai Katana.

Have there been any others on arcade or consoles through the years?

Oops, disregard Twin Eagle II. I was holding my head sideways for a moment while thinking of Second Earth (I don't think that qualifies as a bullet hell any more than Saint Dragon or EDF, though).

Zed Blade (Operation Ragnarok)
Macross 2 might count maybe. Fun game, but hell without autofire.
P-47 Aces as said already.

I got NMK on the brain today

Deathsmiles/II is the obvious choice. Even more obvious than Progear and AK. Border Down probably qualifies as well.

Gradius III Arcade should be recognized as the original "bullet hell."

There's also the doujin series Psyche Metal, which consists of three games(and one alternate version/remix game) made for Saturn's Dezaemon 2 and can be found on the two volumes of satakore.com's Dezaemon 2 Save Game Manager, as well as a PC sequel called Psyche Metal: The Bleeding.

I had the doujin version and loved it...so when the XBLA version first came out I snagged it without even trying a demo of it. I like it...but it is missing a lot of cut scenes that were in the original and I thought it was a bit odd....not like the Xbox 360 couldn't handle it.

Excellent! I've never heard of most of these, time to do some research :)

I realized this morning that the Deathsmiles franchise was an obvious one I left out. Not so sure Border Down is a bullet hell though - I don't remember that many bullets or dense bullet patterns being in the game :? Gradius III really??

Gradius III absolutely gets into bullet hell territory on loops.

Gradius II also gets pretty nuts after a few loops because it doesn't have a rank cap and just keeps adding bullets.

All arcade Parodius games become bullet hell once the rank reaches its maximum in loop 1.(there's a second loop in Parodius Da! too with even more bullets)

Gradius V's rank maxes out after 10 loops (!) and loops indefinitely (!!!). I'm not sure that Konami's style of ultra rank qualifies as bullet hell in the sense that more recent games do. There's very little pattern based attacks and the bullet density comes mostly from aimed shots.

You've clearly never played Gradius 3 Arcade. I'd personally leave off the "bullet" part in its case though.

Deathsmiles is my personal favorite game in the genre, and the fact nobody anywhere seems to like it is consistently frustrating.
