*SOLVED* DVDO Edge won't display 59.94 from PC
*SOLVED* DVDO Edge won't display 59.94 from PC
Okay, I will be amazed if anyone can solve this but... my DVDO Edge refuses to show a 59.94hz image from my PC. When I send this kind of signal I get corrupt lines over the image. 59.94 is fine from all other sources (PS3, 360 etc). I can get a HDMI splitter and split the signal one end going through the Edge the other not and the Edge screws it up every time. Changing to 60hz dead on and there is no problem whatsoever.
Right now I can't think of any other solution other than to route around the Edge but I do use the edge when I play older PC games so this really does suck. I have tried forcing all PC games to use 60hz dead rather than 59.94 but I can't figure out a way to do it.
Any ideas anyone, I can't send the Edge back they'll just blame my sources even though I've tried two different graphics cards.

Re: DVDO Edge won't display 59.94 from PC
Windows games won't override your PC graphics settings. If you define a straight 60.00Hz timing and delete the 59.94Hz one from your "allowed" timings list, then the game will choose the next best one (although I can't imagine that your Edge wouldn't handle the one, but the other). Did you try changing the color space ?

There's no way to "delete" 59.94, I think because it's in the EDID.Windows games won't override your PC graphics settings. On the Edge or in Windows somehow?Did you try changing the color space ?

Re: DVDO Edge won't display 59.94 from PC
windows. I assume you're running on full range RGB right now. Give YCbCr a try - maybe even in 4:2:2 instead of 4:4:4 - the Edge downsamples the color anyway. On the Edge or in Windows somehow?
Re: DVDO Edge won't display 59.94 from PC
I don't know how to change that on Windows but I'll look into it, I thought the Nvidia drivers always forced limited anyway. Weird bug though eh? If it starts doing this on my PS3 or 360 as well it's yet another RMA for the unit.

Re: DVDO Edge won't display 59.94 from PC
Any idea how to force YCbCr on a modern PC? NVidia seem to make it more difficult to tweak anything these days. I tried limited rather than full RGB range that didn't help.
Turning off game mode eliminates the problem but of course I want to play games on my PC.
Right now I've just routed around the Edge. I guess the way to fully fix it would be to download the EDID from my Dr HDMI and somehow edit out 59.94, but I don't really know how to do this.
I've had the PS3 sat here with 59.94 RGB output and the Edge in game mode and no problems at all. PC must be doing something weird, clock out by a fraction or something.

Re: *SOLVED* DVDO Edge won't display 59.94 from PC
So I've actually solved this. Turns out to fix it, you need to go into advanced settings and disable PrEP for 1808p 50/60hz sources.
Yes, that includes when you are using the Edge in game mode.
I don't see how PrEP can be enabled when game mode is on because surely this requires a frame or two to be buffered, but anyway, PrEP is still doing something when game mode is on so turning it off solves the problem.
Would report this to whomever owns ABT these days but they don't seem interested in fixing any bugs anymore.

Re: *SOLVED* DVDO Edge won't display 59.94 from PC
gamemode applies to interlaced sources as well. It switches from proper to single field deinterlacing. You've seen this with 480i sources. So, PREP and game mode together can make sense if you want it.
But of course it should still work and it's certainly a bug that PREP causes this kind of problems with PC signals.

Re: *SOLVED* DVDO Edge won't display 59.94 from PC
Hmm, but PReP is for reprocessing progressive content that has been badly deinterlaced at the recording stage, is it not? I don't see how you can do that on the fly without a frame buffer, so I never thought PReP was working when game mode was on (indeed I believe the Edge's OSD says it's off if game mode is on).
"PReP - or Progressive ReProcessing. This function, enabled automatically, takes sources which were deinterlaced at the source, re-interlaces them, and then deinterlaces them again, using the more accurate processing found in the Edge."
So yeah, how can you do that in only 6ms?

Re: *SOLVED* DVDO Edge won't display 59.94 from PC
field scaling on a line basis. You don't buffer any fields, but start processing the single fields when the first few lines are in. Same for the PREP stage, I guess the processor takes apart the frames after a few lines of input already.
Re: *SOLVED* DVDO Edge won't display 59.94 from PC
Just checked and yep, if you have game mode ON the PReP is set to off, at least that's what the status screen says, so yeah, definite bug somewhere, anyway, solved now woohoo

Re: *SOLVED* DVDO Edge won't display 59.94 from PC
Back in the days on an earlier FW version the VP50 had a bug which added 25ms of lag to already progressive signals. The recommend solution back then was to activate PRED and put the deinterlacing into GM1 - voila, down to 6ms.
On my 50Pro both settings are independent of each other as well. PREP applies to the input stage, while GM applies to the deinterlacing mode only. On the VP50 and 50Pro gamemode was not available for progressive sources. The delay was automatically down to 6ms (from some FW version onwards).

Interesting, hopefully our observations will help other folks too. Would so love to upgrade to a VP50 pro but have other priorities right now (houses, cars, that kind of real life bs...

Re: *SOLVED* DVDO Edge won't display 59.94 from PC
Not this expensive to upgrade. I think there's one in the UK on avforums.com for 370 pounds right now. That's about 150+ compared to what you get for a 2nd hand Edge.
Re: *SOLVED* DVDO Edge won't display 59.94 from PC
Yes second hand they have tumbled in price but I don't have any budget for upgrading at the moment.

Re: *SOLVED* DVDO Edge won't display 59.94 from PC
Interestingly, I've noticed that turning PReP off and game mode off results in a corrupt picture, this is on any 1080p/60hz source I've tried (Dune Media Player, PS3). Add this to the other bugs in the Edge Green (broken 240p handling, blank screen when changing from 1080p60 to 1080p24) and it's clear that the Green isn't as good a processor as it's predecessor.
