SHMUP Monitor/TV-Please help guys

Post by shariar07 »

Hi Guys,

I'm trying to find the best TV or Monitor so i can play my shmups in TATE format.

So far after couple of hours of research this is what i have found

1. BenQ RL2455HM Monitor (has pivot to 90 degrees) Price 180
http://www.amazon.com/BenQ-RL2450HT-Pro ... Q+RL2455HM

2. ASUS VG248QE 24-Inch Screen LED-lit Monitor (has pivot to 90 degrees) Price 250
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00B2HH7G0/ref ... V5JEDF50FW

3. Pivot Stand accessory for TV or Monitor- Monoprice 105970 Adjustable Tilting Monitor Desk Mount Bracket Max, Black Price 40
http://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-105970- ... pd_sim_e_5

As far as TV what should i be looking for or any recommendations. I know it has to have at least 60/120herz refersh rate, 1920x1080 resolution with HDMI, 1 to 2 ms response time. Any HD TV recommendations? As far as monitors are concerned is BenQ as good as Asus?

Thank you in advance

TN panels have pretty bad viewing angles, which can cause problems in TATE, especially at 24". Try first!

I just got an ASUS VG248QE last week. It sure is a lot cheaper in America, cost me 309€ here (~$400). The first one I got had a stuck red pixel in the center of the screen and the upper left corner was a little darker than the rest of the panel. One major complaint is that the colors aren't good, but with some setup it's fine. At least for gaming and browsing. I wouldn't use this monitor to watch movies or edit photos. Another plus is that it uses just 20W, which is notably less than my DELL U2711 that thinks it's a radiator.

It has just 2ms input lag and with 144Hz I don't have problems with screen tearing, so I can just disable VSync and save another frame of lag. From what I've read you can use a hack with NVidia cards to strobe the backlight at 120/144Hz to create a CRT like effect that gets rid of 99% of the trailing.

In theory you could use the monitor in tate format for games, but it would be kinda awkward. You'd basically have to face the right side of the monitor and look a bit to the left. If you sit center the right side of the screen will be darker because of the horrible vertical viewing angles of TN panels. If you can live with slightly higher input lag there should be better (60Hz) IPS alternatives for tate mode. The number of tateable games that run in more than 60fps should also be rather small.

Oh and because you said "1920x1080 with HDMI", that will only get you 60Hz, for 120/144Hz you need DisplayPort or duallink DVI.

I have a 24" 16:10 1920x1200 Samsung SyncMaster 2443bw with a TN panel, the default stand allows it to rotate to portrait/tate. It is true that the viewing angle can be an issue in tate, but from my experience it looks great from directly head on and from the right. The monitor has no noticeable input lag of any kind, inputs feel instant, especially with my 360, it plays beautifully.

I think viewing angle VS input delay is a valid point to consider.

it was, but recently there are so many great new IPS panels with delays in the 3-5ms range, so it's not worth arguing about an extra 2ms and accepting a TN panel in exchange.

The Asus PB248Q for example is a rotatable IPS monitor with 6ms input lag in the same price range as the VG248QE.
