Thanks for even reading this thread... anyways I got the following problem:
Got an NTSC NES for full screen goodness (I live in Germany), "repaired" it the same way I'd done with four German NES's (bending the connector's pins upwards so that they touch the carts' pins properly) and disabled the lockout chip by snipping leg 4 of the lockout chip (I didn't bother connecting it to ground). The German NESs now work flawlessly with every cartridge I put in them, including an Everdrive N8 I have just aquired.
Now, whenever I turn on the NTSC NES it gives me a green screen (normal PAL carts, Everdrive, doesn't matter) EXCEPT when I put in Super Mario Bros, which works flawlessly every time. WTF? Tried wiggling the inserted cart around, slapping the NES etc. to no avail. Tried googling the problem but everyone just recommends cleaning and bending the pins, which I have done. Any of the NES gurus on here have any idea what the problem might be?
(NB: I am aware that the Everdrive N8 wants you to change its regional code by pressing the NES' reset button five times after you've used it on an NES from a different region. I have done that, it doesn't work, and all other PAL carts don't work either. Don't have any NTSC carts to see whether they work properly, sorry)
NTSC NES giving me shit - halp?

I would imagine the problem is just that you're trying to use PAL carts in an NTSC unit. Can you even do that?
If that's not it, then I would look into what about the SMB cart is different from the others. Once you find that out, you can diagnose the problem.

Maybe you should just ground that pin on the lockout IC.
Really the only thing I could think of. I have a US NES and it works flawlessly with every PAL cart I own.

Running PAL carts on an NTSC NES in itself is not a problem, they just run too fast. I really only want to get the Everdrive N8 running... Famicom Disc System roms for example run too slow on a PAL NESEdmond Dantes wrote:I would imagine the problem is just that you're trying to use PAL carts in an NTSC unit. Can you even do that?

Yeah, looks like i'll have to try that. Problem is, I snapped off the pin of the lockout chip when I tried to desolder it, so I will have to get to the pin somehow...which means cutting open the chip. Mmmmh...Fudoh wrote:Maybe you should just ground that pin on the lockout IC.

Connected pin 4 to ground, nothing changed. Reactivated the CIC, didn't make a difference either. I'm starting to get desperate... looks like I will have to get another NTSC NES. Shit.
Re: NTSC NES giving me shit - halp?
sorry to hear! I had my first test run with a NES US NTSC unit along with a Everdrive NES version last night. Went perfectly well!

Happy ending: turns out the problem was the pin connector. Swapped it for one I got out of a German NES and it works flawlessly now.
