Nuclear power is reasonably safe as long as you have very strict regulation oversight making sure that safety standards are up-to-date. Obviously there is always a risk of something going wrong, but the point is to try and minimize that risk.

Until people smarten up and homes are built with solar cells on the roofs by default (why aren't they?! such a waste of potential electricity), we're going to need power generation - you can't just say "close all the nuclear plants!" when something bad happens if your country's infrastructure is built around it unless you think people will be totally a-ok with sudden brown/blackouts. There's also coal plants, but instead of the risk of radioactivity, they pump out a constant stream of pollutants into the atmosphere. Maybe with improved air scrubbing technology coal plants will be more popular again, but nuclear's quite viable right now as we've got lots of radioactive materials around to use. Eventually we ought to rely less on non-renewable energy obviously, hopefully better advancements in turbines, solar cells, etc, will allow us to do so.
