Yeah the shading as I said is still unfinished. I still have a lot of work to do with the clothes. The game will be a sidescrolling beat'em up with a complex fighting game like system (with chain combos, specials and supers) and heavy on platforming / obstacles. Sort of a mix of Guilty Gear, Comix Zone and Strider. The extra animation frames for recovery shouldn't be a problem since you can chain attacks or cancel them with specials. There will not be premade chains as in a belt scroller, there are separate buttons for punch, kick and slashing, so you can do different kinds of combos for different uses (knockdowns, launchers, extended combos, etc) as in a fighting game.

I'll recheck the proportions. How about the general visual design (taking into account the unfinished shading)? Is it decent or an eyesore? Something that could be improved? Is the palette OK? I want to set the design on stone before I try to improve the shading of the coloured example and start polishing and colouring the animations.

Yeah, I think the design is perfectly fine. Definitely worth re-checking the proportions though. The animation is really solid though, great work on that. Now that I get what you were going for, those extra frames actually make a lot of sense. Gives a nice feeling of "oh, I can do another attack now!"

Appreciated KAI, but I don't expect to update it any time soon. You're more likely to see see my graphic design stuff stuff before any more hand drawn bizness - I just don't have the time to scribble these days. :(

First thing I drew in years was on the sketch wall at the cosplay con last weekend, where 12 yr old Chinese kids put me to shame.

Insta-hype! Yeah, it's too early to be worrying about the shading.

I have to admit the general design is pretty conventional, like a pastiche of mostly SNK fighting game women. Of course, many of the typical tricks to make a character seem less usual can add a lot to the complexity of the design...there's no shame in working on the basics first. But perhaps it would be a good investment to spend a little bit of time trying to come up with a kind of cohesive theme for the whole game which fits and suggests different kinds of character designs. All three games you cite for inspiration are quite good at doing this (although GG is the most seemingly unstructured fanservice frenzy of all of these, and seems to just fit whatever it wants to). I have my own ideas about what might be good but it's your game so you decide.

@ KAI:

Maybe it's just me, but doing gratuitous damage to the character for the design hurts the believability of somebody fighting through hordes of enemies. Maybe as a cutscene figure but for normal gameplay - nah.

Had to Google. Yes, I see shades perhaps. ;)

You should bring some of that Graf down to Brighton, plenty of canvas and welcomed by the local council.

Ed:

I already have a setting / theme: WW2 with fantasy elements, kind of similar to Akatsuki Blitzkampf. So you'll see dragon panzers and bombers, German troopers with magic guns, magic powered robots and stuff like that. I based the character design on female partisan WW2 soldiers. I'll post some enemy / stage concepts later when I have a scanner.

As for what you say to KAI, I kind of like the idea of some blood, since the idea is that the character is one of the few survivors of a wiped out squad. Hence the bandages. But you might be right that it could be a bit too much. I'm open to suggestions so feel free to post your thoughts.

I don't know how realistic you're going for, but honestly the design feels like a SNK fighter. Generic, modern, and probably too well-dressed for a partisan. Might be worth looking at some European ethnic dress for inspiration. Oh yeah, and that section from Sengoku 2 is pretty awesome for being strange.

Yeah i've travelled around a bit but not Brighton yet, seems like the scene is very healthy there. Some of the world's best are from around that way (Gary and Aroe MSK spring to mind).

Both of them are everywhere, outside my front door in-fact on the car park fencing. Brighton's Graf scene is enormous, and encouraged by the council offering designated areas to work. A lot of people come to visit just to photograph Graffiti, which can be found on the beach by the Marina, all around town, and stuff that takes up the entire sides of buildings.

I'd be happy to show you around should you visit, alas I don't expect to be home for a good while yet.

You are a good artist, you just don't have confidence in yourself. Really, you shouldn't have wiped your old account.

I know a few artists locally who say they don't think they're very good when really they're quite fantastic.

I stopped drawing actively after my third year of high school simply because of this. It's hard to not compare yourself to others' work sometimes. :(

Standard tings.

Any creative in any medium always considers themselves to be below par, that's how we commit to practice and improvement. Never being satisfied comes with the territory, rest assured. I'm sure even the best Mangaka look at other people's work and think they need to up their game.

These are from (ugh as I get older math sucks more and more) 20 years ago. Wow I can't believe how long ago it was when I drew these. Never really thought about it.

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Those are really nice, big fan of detailed pencil art. You don't see it that often.

Thanks, guys. I'll try to find the sketchbook that comic is in and post the rest of it (although I think that might be the only decent page).

Was going to post exactly this, it's true enough that I feel it's worth reiterating. I'd say it extends beyond creative mediums as well, I definitely feel like I'm shit at shooters and music games when I know that objectively, in the grand scheme of things, I'm probably not. You're never going to compare yourself to people that are worse than you unless you have some sort of rival relationship with them.

It would be slow going with the way I shade. Keep in mind that is all done with a 0.5 mm mechanical pencil. Some a lot of times I have to sharpen it on a nail file to. Little OCD with it.
