One handed shmups?

Post by brook4 »

So my arm hurts and i need to give it a rest for a few days..

What are some good shmups to play with only one hand? can't play dodonpachi a tall like this :(

I had a go at touhou with no shooting bombing or focused movement but you really need focused movement when the girls start throwing ricicles at you.

Sure you can.

About ten years ago (evidently while in new heights of boredom) I decided I'd try to clear the first loop of DDP with one hand. I used this old controller I got at a thrift store like this:

In surprisingly short time I cleared the game with a humble score of 32,421,290 with the A-L (which is odd because I never used this ship otherwise, I must have wanted to get through the bosses as fast as possible).

You could try Ikaruga. I have some old videos of a guy playing doubles, both ships with one hand each. So you could practice half of that.

Similar to this sort of hand-setup, you can use a Saturn pad mapped to the outer edge of buttons only with your hand laid down more comfortably. A on Z, B on Y, and C on C is usually how I do it.

My left arm is paralyzed so that's how I play. It works well enough  Might be harder if you're not used to it though.

Dunno any STGs but if you like the old arcade game Wizard of Wor then Lesbian Spider Queen from Mars is a very good clone that just uses directionals.

Or just map fire and bomb to the left triggers and play any 2 button STG.

Mars Matrix is a one button STG btw (different timings for different actions).

You can probably play any shooter one-handed.

e.g.: Famous Ikaruga double play video.

Anything with two buttons, that has a full button config. Just put them on the shoulder triggers.

And yea, specially designed one-handed controllers have been around for ages. Handicapped people play games too. Just do a search for "One handed (console name) controller".

Ark Area and Nova 2001 are very close to being one-handed shmups. One of the buttons (the one used to lock your ship direction in Nova 2001, or allow free aim in Ark Area - Ark Area's version is refined because they realized players would be likely to be aiming in the same direction for long periods of time) is found, on original units, on the joystick top. That leaves just the fire button on the CP.

What you can't see in the video is that he's playing with his feet as well.

And his ... iced coffee.

If you're playing on Xbox 360 you might give Geometry Wars Retro Evolved 2 in Pacifist mode a try.

I second Mars Matrix.

Or you could try playing on a keyboard using WASD, with your thumb on spacebar for firing and your pinky on LShift and LControl. (or if it's your left arm that's shot, find an equivalent on the other side of the keyboard)

EDIT: Raiden Legacy also has a very poorly-implemented "autofire" mode, and by "autofire" I mean you don't need to hold the button at all (then again, considering that this is Raiden Fighters we're talking about, that's about the worst thing you can do)
