I recently purchased an Egret 2. After eagerly waiting for it to arrive and turning it on for the first time my excitement quickly turned into frustration.
The monitor turns on but no power is sent to the game board. I tried my DOJ pcb and my single slot neo geo motherboard and neither work. With the DOJ pcb the fan doesn't turn on and with the neo geo motherboard the red LED doesn't turn on which suggest the PCBs aren't getting power.
After reading a few of the posts on this forum I thought it may be the fuse in the power supply. Opened it up but it doesn't seem to be blown. The little wire inside the fuse is still intact.
I tried plugging in my dreamcast using a jpac I had laying around since the jpac is powered by the controller port instead of the jamma edge. To my surprise, it worked. Game shows up on the monitor fine.
So based on my somewhat limited knowlege, my thinking is that either the power supply is a goner or a wire is loose/damaged in the jamma harness. I checked the jamma harness. It's wired oddly. I say this based on my comparison with the jamma harness in my blast city. For example, some of the wired are brdged with other on the jamma connector. However, nothing appears to be loose.
At this point, I don't know what else to check. Any help would be much appreciated. If pictures of something is needed to help diagnose the problem, let me know.
Thanks in advance,
Sad Egret owner
Help! New Egret 2 doesn't work. Help !
Re: Help! New Egret 2 doesn't work. Help !
I've had a bad power supply that did this.
In this situation, a multimeter is your best friend.... check the power to the board

The Jamma harness on an E2 isn't exactly straight Jamma, which is why it's a little different than the Blast. That said, DOJ and a 1slot should be plug and play.
Like above poster said, get a multimeter and check power at the board.

Thank you both for the responses.
I had anticipated that the best way to diagnose the problem would be to use a multimeter. However, I've never used one before. This is likely a stupid question but how do you go about checking if the board is getting power with the multimeter. I presume you have to apply the probes from the multimeter to the pins on the pcb that connects to the jamma connector. One probe on 5+ and the other on ground (pins c and d).
Would this also be the way to check the voltage that is sent to the pcb to determine whether you're getting close to 5v for PCBs that require 5v.

You cant visually tell if a fuse is blown you have check the continuity with the Multimeter.
For the power on the jamma harness, yes use your multimeter as you descriibed and make sure your multimeter is set to DC voltage. Make sure you get a good contact on the jamma harness cause you can get funky reading if its not completely touching.

It's probably the power supply. The E2 loom is supposed to have wire bridges to connect the grounds together.
I doubt the wiring is at fault unless you can visibly see frayed wires etc.

Basically, yes. Set the multimeter to DC current, positive probe to a +5 or +12 wire, black/negative probe to ground. You can also check it right at the terminals on the PSU itself if you suspect that's what is bad. The readings will be different if there is not a board hooked to the jamma harness; it is best to check with a board hooked up to get proper readings.Neo Bliss wrote:Thank you both for the responses.

You might remember me from such movies as skate323k137 on neo-geo and racketboy forums.

Thanks everyone for the input.
Here's an update. I tried a different psu. Unfortunately the problem remains. There is no power going to the pcb board. Monitor still turns on but nothing else.
I'm beginning to think that the problem is occurring before the power goes to the psu. Tried using a multimeter directly on the psu and I wasn't getting a reading. Admittedly, I'm not 100% sure I'm using it right. I set the multimeter to DCV. However, there are a number of different options (e.g. 2, 20, 200, etc). I then applied the black probe to 0v and the red probe to 5+ and I got nothing.
While testing with the multimeter, i didn't have a pcb board plugged in and there was a really high pitched noise that was emitted from the cabinet. Not sure if this is relevant since the noise goes away when there's a pcb plugged in.
Also, there is no fluorescent bulb plugged into the cabinet. Can't imagine this would make a difference but I figured i might as well mention it.
Don't know what else to do. Any further input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Set your meter to AC and measure the AC input to the PSU, is there voltage? Do you have a photo of the PSU while the cab is switched on showing the wiring?
High pitched noise with nothing hooked up is relatively normal depending on the screen type.
