Recording Dreamcast with Vp30?

Post by Endgame22 »

Hello all, I have looked for a solution online and in the forums so I decided to post a new topic about this. I own a DVDO Vp30 upscaler and a Haupauge HD PVR. I would like to record Dreamcast footage with my PVR.

I have two VGA to 5 BNC cables. The Dreamcast is plugged into the Vp30's BNC input using the vga adapter and one of the VGA to 5BNC cables mentioned. Coming from the BNC output of my Vp30 are 3 BNC to Female RCA adapters, from the output I have a component cable going to my PVR input. I'm assuming this isn't working because the signals of VGA and component are completely different.

How do I set this up to record?

Thanks.

the chinese vga boxes for the dreamcast are not fully compatible with the iscan vp30 (though it's also possible that no dreamcast vga solution works witht he vp30, i haven't tried anything but the chinese vga box yet).

anyways, if you connect the vp30 and pvr via component you'll need to set the vp30 to output in 480p/720p/1080p format. but whatever you're doing it's most likely the fault of the dreamcasts vga signal that your setup isn't working.

anyways, if you connect the vp30 and pvr via component you'll need to set the vp30 to output in 480p/720p/1080p format
and you have to configure the the output as component (color space option in the output menu) of course. And you have to switch the output from digital to analogue (also in the output menu).

regarding the VGA box incompatibility: if you get a picture from your DC using the VP30 on your TV via HDMI, then recording will work as well - it's just a matter of configuring the VP30 correctly.

Thanks for your suggestions. I fiddled with settings but nothing really changed. I unplugged the vp30 and plugged it in again though and the image came up! It stayed steady until I turned my system off. When I turned the Dreamcast on again, the image wouldn't come back. So it seems that if I unplug the vp30 and plug it in again, it will solve the problem. Sometimes it takes a few times for it to work though. I'll keep experimenting and see if there is an easier way to solve this problem.

BTW the vga adapter I'm using now is made by Beharius, so it is way more solid than that piece of crap made in china one I had that broke on me a while back.

seems like the vp30 really just doesn't like the dreamcast's vga output signal then

Try to unlock the output refresh rate (output menu - framerate - 60Hz - unlocked - 59.94Hz). Might very well just be a sync issue which can be solved this way.

i think that's unlikely, considering that the vp30 won't peroperly recognize the dreamcast's signal at all.

fun fact: you still get a picture if you set the vp30 to passthrough mode! and it even scales it using your output settings! (at least i think that's what it does, didn't test it out properly)
i wouldn't recommend doing this since it's clearly a bug

that's highly dependent on your display. VP30 w/ ABT or VP50 on my setup: no picture at all with NES or SFC unless I unlock the output.

with the dreamcast the vp30's led doesn't even shift to blue (to indicate processing) iirc

@ryu I can concur with that statement. I usually only get the green LED light on the Vp30 with Dreamcast. I've tried different refresh rates and set the sync type to bi and tri level, and I've also fiddled with the 31khz/15khz switch on the vga adapter Beharius made. I usually only get an image if I unplug and replug the Vp30 a few times in a row. Its annoying to say the least. However, once I get the image it stays.
