Updated:11/9/05--What of G-Net & PSP versions of Kollon?

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

I just bought the Japanese PSP version of Kollon the other day. It's a cool arcade puzzler game.

I do remember another fellow shmupper (it was oxtsu) saying that Kollon was (going to be produced as) a Taito G-Card for the Taito G-Net arcade motherboard platform.

I realize playing Kollon on the PSP reminds me that the original Taito G-Card version of Kollon was played with an 8-way digital joystick and three-button setup.

Of course, the PSP version of Kollon uses the PSP's widescreen LCD screen to maximum effect giving the playview a 16:9 aspect ratio as opposed to the original screen aspect ratio of 4:3 on the Taito G-Net arcade hardware setup.

However, the PSP version of Kollon doesn't save your high scores nor does it create a user game save file on the PSP's Memory Stick Pro Duo memory card at all...I thought that was indeed odd for an arcade based puzzler game. Perhaps I should get the Taito G-Card version of Kollon and find out the answers to my questions of how both versions of Kollon fare on the PSP & Taito G-Net hardware.

My question is: are there any differences between the original Taito G-Card version and the later released PSP version of Kollon?

I've seen the Kollon G-Net card on sale for around $100. This was the last G-net game, IIRC (or Space Invaders Anniversary). Honestly the graphic and theme are just too 'schoolgirl' for me to bear. And the game system doesn't seem all that interesting (I like a great puzzle game now and then, but by no means am I an afficianado of the genre). What are your impressions of Kollon's game system/mechanics?
