Shmups on the 3DS

Post by shaowebb »

So I just started getting titles on the 3DS e-shop after discovering that unlike other digital services I can add the exact amount of points I need per transaction similar to Steam (I only needed .58 more for a title and by God thats all I had to pay to get it).

Anyhow after the fun I had in the flight sections of Kid Icarus I am curious what shmups exist for the 3DS on its eshop. I never see reviewers talk at length on this and honestly most youtube reviews on shmups are to be taken with a grain of salt. So how about it shmup go-ers...what shmups exist on this system (especially on the eshop since it has no advertisements) and what are your opinions on each?

I'm curious about some of the oddballs like B-Team ep1/ep2 and GG Series Dark Spirits.

I can't speak for other regions but there's a ton of shmup stuff on the Japanese VC. Famicom versions of Gradius and Salamander among others. Not arcade perfect but both of them are excellent classic games. Of particular note is Rekka, the Famicom Yagawa shooter that feels like a modern Cave game rendered in 8-bit.

As for 3DS specific stuff there are 3D versions of Xevious and Twinbee that are pretty cool. Not so difficult, but they are good relaxing fun and the 3D effects look really good on those classic 2D graphics imo.

Also while not really a traditional shmup, the touch pad based Kaihou Shoujou (Liberation Maiden) is really great, and I think it would definitely appeal to this forum community.

Here are all the 3DS-specific STGs I can remember off the top of my head:

3D STGs
3D Space Harrier (eShop, JP-only for now)
Liberation Maiden (eShop)
Kid Icarus Uprising (retail)
Nano Assault / EX (vanilla version is retail-only, EX version is eShop-only)
Star Fox 64 3D (retail/eShop)

2D STGs
3D Classics: Twinbee (eShop)
3D Classics: Xevious (eShop)
Chain Blaster (eShop, JP-only)
Pac-Man & Galaga Dimensions (retail; contains OG Galaga, Galaga Legions and a new gyro-based Galaga game)

NON-TRADITIONAL/BORDERLINE STGs
BIT.TRIP.SAGA (retail/eShop; I think one or two of the games are STG-esque?)
Dream Trigger 3D (retail; weird as fuck)
Kokuga (JP-only for now but an international release is all but confirmed, probably eShop-only; top-down tank shooter by G.rev)

VIRTUAL CONSOLE STGs
Gradius (NES)
Galaga (FC, JP-only)
Salamander (FC, JP-only but has been OFLC-rated as Life Force)
Star Soldier (FC, JP-only)
Summer Carnival '92 Recca (NES, JP-only but has been OFLC-rated)

Whoa, when did this happen? I was hoping this would actually get localized. Got a source?

It's a shame MileStone went under. They had a 3DS port of Karous slated, supposedly.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

It's been rated by a few different PAL-region ratings boards, with G.rev listed as the publisher.

What about Metal Torrent? How is Nano Assault EX? I liked Nanostray 2 alright aside from the bosses.

I got Metal Torrent during the Club Nintendo deal awhile back. Its pretty much easy mode. Backgrounds dont change and the difficulty is never high. It has good controls and a nice bullet pattern for your ship, but the enemies are just dull. It feels like a prototype to test the tools for a game that never got stages designed for it sadly.

Still got no idea what Bteam ep 1 and ep 2 are like overall and whether the GG Series Dark Spirits is any good. I dig his deathsmiles shoot left or right thing and his 4 orbs that gain different shots as each can absorb and fire a different power up as you go. I just dont know if the game is challenging. I know the Paul's shooter thing is trash though. Saw a video of it and it felt sort of cringe worthy.

It looks like Chain Blaster is coming to the US VC tomorrow, so one less Japan-only shmup.

There are a few topics like the one here that talk about Dark Spirits. It sounds like one of the better GG Series games, but not all that great. Nintendo Life and Nintendo World Report have reviews of B-Team. There are videos of the games on Youtube here and here. It appears B-Team has a retail release in Europe (as far as I can tell, it looks like the DSiWare version is the same as the retail one, but split into parts), as well. B-Team definitely looks like a Cannon Fodder knock-off.

Did you play Metal Torrent with the blue ship? The red one is pretty much easy mode with auto shield. I'm not that great at bullet frenzy games, but it does seem to be a lot harder using the blue ship.

The 3DS d/l of Nano Assault EX has built-in support for the optional Nintendo Circle Pad Pro accessory for that cool twin stick shooting mechanics. A single AAA battery powers up the CPP setup and you're good to go.

Hopefully this time without any anti-Canada BS. I was hoping we'd seea NorAm release, but suddenly got really doubtful that Canada would see it when the Kokuga thing happened. Fingers crossed.
It did release here! There's even a demo. :D

Where do you find Mii Force?

Edit: I found it. Seems as though you need to be out streetpassing to be able to play it though.

I think Fantasy Zone 3D might be out now, but I'm kinda waiting for FZIIDX, as I enjoyed that more playing in MAME. There's also that one Revolver 360 knock off thing with the rotating. I can't remember what it's called. Quarth GB on the VC might be of interest to forum members (I'm thinking of picking that one up personally). It's kind of like a mix between Space Invaders and Tetris.

As for Recca being like a modern CAVE game, that would maybe be the case if modern CAVE games allowed you to absorb most bullets, but threw a bunch of crippling powerups at you to dodge...and used a Raizing style medalling system (That part is actually pretty cool, though). Not to say that it's bad (actually it's quite fun), but it's definitely not terribly modern feeling.

3D Fantasy Zone is out. It's good stuff. 3D Fantasy Zone II is coming in a few weeks (no specific date yet, but last few games came fairly early in the month). 3D Fantasy Zone II is based on the PS2 remake rather than the SMS original. I'm especially excited for this one.

There's also Karous (on cart) and Raidrgy de Gojaru(digital) these days. I don't have Karous but I wan't to say it's not a standard arcade style game. Radirgy is more or less just the survival mode from Noah with some additonal twists. It's not terrible, but it's held back by problamatic controls (weapon switching).

Agreed ^

Metal Torrent is awesome, but you really need to be playing it for score. It's incredibly thrilling and fun to play it for score.

Yes, good point. J3DS has a few others, those Milestone games, plus Sagittarius A Star

Yeah, I'd definitely say that score is where Metal Torrent is at. I blind 1LC'd Accipiteur. Bateleur is generally more difficult, however, but I'd still say the scoring is still the best part

Don't get too hyped, it kind of sucks, sadly.
