Kawasaki Warehouse - Hong Kong Slums Arcade
Kawasaki Warehouse - Hong Kong Slums Arcade
I'm going to be in Tokyo in about two weeks and was planning to hit up Taito Hey in Akiba when my friend linked me to this.
HAs anyone been to this arcade before? Is it worth skipping out on Akiba for the day and hitting this up instead?

Out of interest, anyone know if Kowloon's 'walled city' still exists? I've never seen it outside of Shenmue 2. There are still grimy backstreets in Kowloon, but you can eat your breakfast off the floor in HK island.

reminds me of big trouble in little china
Re: Kawasaki Warehouse - Hong Kong Slums Arcade
The old walled city was pulled down some years back. Just as well - appalling conditions there.
This place looks fun though.

God damn, mainland China has lowered your standards. I only went to Kowloon briefly, and the shopping districts were grimy enough for me, that's for sure. I might give it another stab if I go again, which I'm sure I will.Skykid wrote:Out of interest, anyone know if Kowloon's 'walled city' still exists? I've never seen it outside of Shenmue 2. There are very few "hard to get to" places in Kantou. Some just take a while. It's apparently not to hard to get to from inner Tokyo, so I'm definitely gonna go.

I'm talking about HK island, the place I couldn't believe you didn't go to, remember?GaijinPunch wrote:God damn, mainland China has lowered your standards. HK Island is Hong Kong, Kowloon is the old sector. Good for photography and trying to dodge bullets in Chunking Mansions, but after the first mile in from the ferry port it goes into slum mode. Full of character though.
HK Island (which you could have visited at any point via the ferry for a mere 20 pence) is perhaps the most impressive city I've ever seen in my life. Literally made of concrete and hard cash.

went to HK back in '97. after the then "brother in law" won a nice package of cash at Happy Valley racing we went there for an Indian. Amazing food but man - the whole building was pretty grim.Good for photography and trying to dodge bullets in Chunking Mansions
It was during National Week - went up onto the rooftop afterwards for the fireworks. Pretty incredible all round.
Been back a couple of times for work but only really get as far as the shopping places and the business suites in the Mandarin Hotel. Really could have done with spending sometime exploring.
Anyways, the arcade looks at least interesting setting-wise - have a few friends in Kawasaki so will plan a visit and go snap some shots for the Arcade Picture collection.

Le centre de jeu Kawasaki a été présenté dans le fantastique ¥ 100 arcade documentaire qui fait un centre regard jeu japonais comme la Chine. Film très intelligent pour le faire en uniforme.

Ah, gotcha. Well, in all fairness, I went for work, not vacation. Only had a couple of days off, and the filth of Wan Chai was enough for me and my camera.I'm talking about HK island, the place I couldn't believe you didn't go to, remember?![]()

I think Kowloon is a city photographer's dream tbh, and you got the shots to prove it. If I can tempt you to visit me in the mainland you seem so terrified of, I can offer you booze, endless clubbing, women ogling you, and a photo opportunity every ten yards.GaijinPunch wrote:Ah, gotcha. I may take you up on that. I need to see how it all works out. I might be able to do like 2 work days before or after a weekend in HK. I've always had zero interest in China, but it's kind of stupid to not go being so close. Women ogling over me? Would be a nice change from all the men ogling over me.Skykid wrote:I think Kowloon is a city photographer's dream tbh, and you got the shots to prove it. Ah, I can actually go either Friday or Saturday, so if you really want to go and that would be better let me know. It would be more interesting to go with someone so I don't mind changing the time.
Re: Kawasaki Warehouse - Hong Kong Slums Arcade
I would go to this arcade in a heartbeat. Love the look of it!
I've always been fascinated by Kowloon. I came across a really great article about it about fifteen years ago that had a ton of pictures. The best tour you will ever see through it is actually in the movie Bloodsport. It was filmed there when the place was mostly empty before they tore it down. They still had to pay the local mafia a ton of money to get in safely of course. JCVD has said it was one of the most exciting times of his life, there would have been no other way he would have been allowed to step foot near it.
A virtual Kowloon is also featured heavily in William Gibson's book, Idoru.

Once you've lived in Tokyo for a while, you try to avoid Kawasaki like the plague. Unless you're dcharlie and you just walk there.xris wrote:I would go to this arcade in a heartbeat. Love the look of it!
