Gaist Crusher - Treasure's new game for 3DS

Post by Ebbo »

So Treasure's 3DS title has been finally unveiled: Gaist Crusher, which is apparently part of Capcom's new line up of games for younger children.

I'm not particularly excited by the footage, reminds me a bit of Monster Hunter-style brawler with big monsters and some kind of character customization. But anything by Treasure is still going to keep me interested.

... And now we can all gather together lamenting why Treasure isn't developing the next Strider game instead of this :P

I'm glad that you think so. Agree to disagree.

*This* stuff is Treasure? Wow...how the mighty are fallen. Truly.

I fully understand the idea of "We need to sell things to eat and pay rent." It's just that this seems so backwards for them. Then again, they did do that McDonalds game years ago, didn't they? I guess I'll wish them luck...and a swift return to their strong suits.

Aside from 'RPG elements', I gotta say I'm diggin' how it looks.

Don't forget Stretch Panic, Silpheed, Tiny Toons, Dragon Drive, Astro Boy, Wario World, Hajime no Ippo, and the DS & Wii Bleach fighting games. All from Treasure, all ranging from average to poor.

This is just the latest game in that line. It's nothing new for Treasure, who have always relied on lower quality licensed fare to subsidize their hardcore-oriented masterpieces.

Although Treasure's licensed games tend to be a bit better than most, from what I can make out in the footage this doesn't seem to be anything worth getting excited about.

The best one might hope for is if Treasure's got another 3DS game in development at the same time. I think they have 2-3 small teams, but this may be taking most of their resources.

It's also probably only because of partnerships like this (and those with Sega, Nintendo, and Microsoft in the past) that they're still around today. I think I remember reading that Wario World is their best-selling game.

Your statement is more than fair...though I dislike the inclusion of Silpheed and Astro Boy there. I'd call them better than just average, but your point is still legit.

Is that a fact? That seems *really* strange to me. A Gamecube game is their best seller ever? Heck, I remember the craziness that was the release of Ikaruga for the Dreamcast way back when, and I have a really hard time thinking that a Gamecube, non-first-party-Nintendo release would be better than that.

I could easily see a portable game displacing it, but a Gamecube game? Really?

Edited to add that it appears that WW sold about 400K copies. That's way, *way* more than Ikaruga will ever sell, ever. I honestly never knew that WW was that good or popular, nor that Gamecube games ever really even sold that well at all.

Astro Boy is amazing. One of their best imo.

Silpheed is shit though.

Why *is* that? I fully admit that my exposure to the game is pretty limited, but in my playing of the thing during the limited times I had access to it, I was enjoying it. I certainly haven't had a chance to play the whole thing through, nor perhaps even enough time to fully evaluate it, but my general impression of it was that it was kind of a Treasure-Lite shooter experience. There was fun to be had, there, and it wasn't tough to mine, either!

Not so? Seriously: I'm wondering what about it makes you say that, as I really don't have enough exposure to it to even tell you that I think you're wrong. I want to believe that you're wrong, but I can't in good conscience stake any real claim about it.

Flesh that out, please.

Mmmmmmmm, well why Crapcom outsourced Strider to Double Helix and this game to treasure??? Are they you just cheating on us?? I'll never understand their business decissions anyway and I really hope that Treasure use these earnings as funds to finish or to "start" a sucessor for Ikaruga, cause it has been a while since they said they were working on it.

It's just a bit of a crap game. Slow, bland, limited and with a dodgy perspective. OTT cinematic voice acting and unskippable sequences grate, and as a shmup it's just largely uninspired. Try playing it to the end, it's a very boring work. Feels unfinished, to a degree.

I don't agree with the inclusion of Bleach either. The first DS game is good stuff. Also, I thought the Wii versions were done by someone else, not Treasure. I heard mostly good things about their Hajime no Ippo GBA game, but I haven't played it. I also agree with Astro Boy not belonging in this list.

edit: Looks like Treasure did make a Wii Bleach, but it only came out in Japan.

yeah, not sure that the GBA Hajime no Ippo games belong on there - i'd toss my hat in for the harder version of Astro Boy as well. Not a massive huge great game but above average for sure.

Astro Boy was better than Gunstar Super Heroes. (Or at least that's how it seems so far; if I beat GSH I can't remember it, but I know Astro Boy had me glued to the GameBoy Player for a while.)

Speaking of Treasure, is there anything of interest in this Iuchi blog post? Something about working at a new company maybe but I can't tell.

Wario World won't change your life, but I'd say it's worth playing through once, especially since you can probably find it for pretty cheap by now.

I'm not sure I'd have much faith in Treasure remaking Strider either. It's been over 15 years since Treasure released what I'd consider an excellent sidescroller. I think Treasure developing this game is a solid strategic decision though in that it can attract a new generation of Treasure fans. Unfortunately, I doubt I'll be aboard the train.

As for my thoughts on the trailer for this game, I'm a bit skeptical. It looks too much like Monster Hunter Jr. to me.

This game looks stupid.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

I think I am the only one that really digs Stretch Panic. There are some truly wacky bosses that make for some really fun gameplay.

Agreed 100% on Silpheed. Even when this game was new it was terribly barren and uninspired. It was and still is a bore to play. Even the Sega CD Silpheed is more enjoyable, which sadly isn't saying much.

I dunno what looks so "bad" about it. I don't know how it's going to turn out, but it looks fine to me.

I'm also glad to see they put something out at all. It's been a long time since that Bangai-O game on XBLA. I thought they were kaput.

First Bleach DS game was a lot of fun, a nice easy to play fighter with actual mechanics. Not particularly balanced or exceptionally deep, but certainly enjoyable. The GBA Ippo game was quite a bit of fun as well, though I imagine it wouldn't do much for anyone that wasn't a fan of the series. I've been told by a lot of friends that Astro Boy is great, haven't played it myself.

Also, McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure is fucking awesome. http://youtu.be/2KLi0XqR_QE

It actually got me into the series, haha. I wanted context for the more interesting characters like Sendo and Mashiba. Fun little game with excellent controls and brutal action. Works best on a GBA Player with good speakers so the hyper-expressive animation and explosive impact SFX are at their best.

The game wasn't what brought me to the series, but I did get into it. Good stuff. I also like the broken English opening song of the first season.
