Nice little cosy place, with PS3 and X360 hook-ups, ideal for horizontal shmups
MAME cabs, not a big selection of shmups but it'll get you by for a few hours
PS: with big-ass-throw sticks

Right - let's do the 20th - this week!
So we could still do August 3rd as well
That sounds good to me
You have PM...

I'm still waiting for that day

I think you should put your cab in a pub
Anyways, i need to remember to return the DVDs to you
Awesome afternoon round Spadgy's pad. Everyone spurning CAVE's latest for Twin Eagle: Revenge Joe's Brother was a heartwarming sight. Hope we meet up again soon!
Yeah, thanks spadgy. Good to see everyone again. Finally got to experience Harmful Park - pretty damn good.
JDE mentioned a mini comp for the next meet - can't remember the game, but this might be a good thing to start up anyhow. Got to get our chops ready for this years comp.
Such fun yesterday, so thanks so much for coming over! Wicked to see you CHI, Dan76, Blinge, JDE, hzt, MX7, Illyriad and Rupert H! Special props to Blinge for joining us - always nice to have extra people join us for our gatherings. I hope you and your mate will be back!
I think the challenge game James mentioned was Twin Eagle. And what a game! I played a little more after you guys left. It's actually got some substance to it beyond that awesome soundtrack. For a 1988 shooter it's pretty fast and exciting, there's some fairly intense ways to push the scoring through collecting bonuses (especially in the end of level 'hi speed sections').
I worked out that the power ups don't affect weapon type. In short you have two weapons; an infinite supply of your standard weapon and a limited supply of your second 'missile' weapons. Two of your main power-ups impact the attributes of your standard weapon and your missiles, whether you have missile ammo in stock on not. So...
L = Increases 'length' of weapon. In other words, the range of the weapon up the screen is increased.
M = Increases number of standard shots/missiles you fire in a single short. In other words it increases firepower.
Then...
S = Increases helicopter speed
B = Extra bomb
And the power-ups with a number on give you extra missile ammo.
Power-ups also seem to give you lots of bonus points, and there's loads available (at high risk) in the 'fast sections' at the end of each level.
At the end of the level you also get a bonus based on '1000 points x number of enemies killed in the 'fast section' level ending'. At least, that's what I think it's multiplying. I'm pretty certain it's not tallying all the enemies killed in the level.
Then there's a fairly generous 'Perfect' bonus of 50,000 points available at each stage's end. I thought it was just for a 'no-miss up to that point', but that's not all there is to it. Maybe you need to 100% kill the 'fast section'? Maybe its about hitting a certain score? Maybe lives have nothing to do with it.
There appears to be quite aggressive rank. I haven't worked out controlling it.
So, having shared my secrets, lets do this competition! High score by the next gathering at my house (hopefully August 3rd). Or do we have a live Twin Eagle high scoring contest at my house then?
Oh, and the lyrics to the Twin Eagle soundtrack?
Woh woh woh, gonna break you down!!
The table will turn around, you'll see!!
Big tune!
I also played some Mad Shark after you lot all left. It's such fun, so it's definitely coming out next time you guys are over!

The choice was simple: one game has annoying little girls nattering at me constantly, while the other has an entire glam rock band encouraging me with awesome guitar riffs.
Seriously though, I really enjoyed SDOJ and will definitely be getting it soon. Then turning the voices off.

Twin Eagle: Revenge Joe's Brother is the game, and we'll be using the same settings as in the high score thread (but no autofire) - http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?t=28525
Spadgy kindly put up a mini guide just a few posts ago, but if anyone finds things to add please post those too, especially stuff about the rank system.

I spoke to CHI about possibly meeting with you guys sometime in the future.
I live in London, I have been following this thread for a very long time and have been meaning and hoping to meet you all.
I do not know anyone who is into this particular hobby, my friends don't really get it. It would be nice to talk and play with people who understand.

What's HOG's Thursday pricing like? Do want to visit before I move out of London but last time it was very expensive for someone who doesn't care for fighting games...

And I just heard back from Mark at HoG. Apparently DDP is in great demand there (and asked for 'a lot' when not installed). Nice to hear our genre still can attract demand that way!
