What keys do you use on the keyboard?

I use my left hand for the shoot and bomb buttons and my right hand on the arrow keys for movement:

• index finger on left key
• ring finger on right key
• middle finger is home on the up key, but is used for down key too

but then I thought maybe I should use the numpad instead:

• index finger on 4 for left
• ring finger on 6 for right
• middle finger on 8 for up
• thumb on 2 for down

that might make it fast to move quickly up and down - something I don't see a lot of because I only play verticals.

So has anyone switched between these? What do you think is the best way to set up controls? maybe I should get a pad...

When I used to use keyboard, and whenever I do now, I use ESDF for movement and JKL for buttons. Any more buttons go UIO.

Yeah, Master of Weapon was giving the old arrow key fingers a workout. I don't think the arrow keys are optimal but they are nicely positioned and I have gotten used to using them. WASD being on a slant messes with me. Probably ought to look again more seriously at a joystick for the PC...

I just use the doujin standard. A lot of games don't allow you to reassign keys the way you'd like, if at all, so I try to use the same configuration as much as possible.

Every time I switch to my stick, I have to wrap my brain around using my left hand for movement. I wish I could just easily flip the joystick and buttons around.

Such a shame doujin developers tend to be so lazy/incompetent with key remapping; they're the whole reason I eventually had to get myself a gamepad for PC games. I prefer to play 2D games on keyboard whenever I can, but I simply have to have movement on my left hand and other inputs on the right.

If there is slow-movement, I try to follow the Touhou layout. Special keys are buttons that control specific abilities, like Espgaluda's Kakusei.

Shift = Slow-movement
Z = Shoot
X = Bomb
C = Special 1
A = Special 2

Sometimes, I have to shift it down because some doujin games do not accommodate the shift key as a working button. In that case:

Z = Slow-movement
X = Shoot
C = Bomb
V = Special 1
A = Special 2


If Escape isn't automatically set as the pause key, W is my pause key. Arrow keys for movement.

For Cave games I have ring, middle index on Shot/Bomb/Auto. For stuff like Batrider and Garegga I use middle and index on Shot/Bomb and just move my index over to adjust options. I can't remember if I remap Touhou games to use Shift/A/S, I probably don't.

Keyboard is my preferred input method but for a long time I was all about sticks. Eventually decided I cared more about how well I played than how arcade accurate my setup was.

If I'm crazy enough to play with a keyboard (something I'm forced to do now that I don't have my stick anymore) I just use the typical PC movement keys (ASDW) and the numpad or IOPKLÑ for the buttons.

I generally keep my left hand over asdf and my right on jkl; and use whatever's closest. I switch between my left and right thumb for the space bar just to mix it up a bit. It works pretty well.
