Sega Version 2 Naomi I/O Converter

Post by Joe T. »

Hey y'all,

I recently acquired a Sega V.2 Naomi I/O converter. It's the black box looking one. So far it works, but I've found that it doesn't work quite as well as my Capcom I/O. Particularly, the colors and brightness are a bit funky. For example, on the all white Naomi Screen, the edges of the screen are bright white, but there are bands of darker white throughout the rest of the screen. Similarly, on an all black part of the screen, only part of the image will be a dark black and the remainder of the screen is a washed out grey. During gameplay, it's not particularly bad, but certain games like Cosmic Smash look awful since there is a lot of black and white.

Does this sound like maybe something is toasted on the I/O board? I've tried it with two different Naomi motherboards on two different cabinets (an astro city and a Super neo Candy) with the same results. If I have time tonight I'll try to take a pic or two. Any input would be appreciated!

I use a Sega Version 2 Naomi I/O convertor with a Taito Type X setup on my Egret II candy cab & it works flawlessly. Haven't had any issues with it. Perhaps it could a graphical glitch of sorts?

Some posted pics of the graphical issue would be most helpful.

I use a Sega ver 2. I/O as well, and haven't had any problems either.

I'm not sure if these pictures really show the problem very well but this is it. White and black come through in streaky bands depending on the graphics on screen:
