PAL Lords of Thunder

Post by M0nk3y »

I came across the Sega Mega CD Library whilst searching for info on a PAL release of Lords of Thunder after it was mentioned by Kiken.

Seems to be one of the rarer PAL releases (I've never seen one), but at least this great game did make it to the UK. Excellent.

Is it me, or are PAL Mega CD games are the only games outside of Japan to feature spine cards?

Some US Neo-CD games came with spine-cards.

Actually, they don't even mention the PC-Engine Super-CD original in any part of the review.

When I do my Mega CD Shooting Special, I'll be sure to do a side-by-side comparison of both versions of Winds/Lords of Thunder.

In the very least, the PAL Mega-CD version has the original Masamune Shirow cover art.

My quick review:

Why the TurboDuo version of Lords of Thunder was better than the Mega CD (Sega CD) version?

On the Mega CD version:

Missing sound effects!
Sound was way too loud (you can barely hear the music)!
Music was torn down (or the music was a lot worst than the Duo version)!
Game was way too easy (the Duo version was much harder)!
Less colors (The Duo can display more colors than the Mega CD)

The Duo version was just perfect. Lords of Thunder was made for the Duo hardware, not for the Sega CD. :)

Actually, the control is much better in the Mega/Sega CD version (it's far more fluid and intuitive). Also, the MCD rev seems to actually be smoother (as if it's running at a higher frame-rate).

I disagree, the control on the Duo was better than the Mega CD. I can't tell if the Duo version is more "smoother."

Was there a difference in difficulty? I thought the SCD version was supposed to be harder since when you're hit, you go into hitstun. Anyway, I prefer the SCD music myself since it's a bit mellower.

Yeah, because when I play the Sega CD version of the game for a second time (on normal), I 1cc it!

It took me a lot longer to 1cc the Duo version (on normal).

Well as I have the PCE version, I'll certainly be interested in the differences. The PCE version may be (apparently) technically better, but at the end of the day, Winds/Lords is a quality game.

I'm only interested in the Mega CD version so I can play it in the Dining room when the Missus has hijacked the Front room telly to watch Mr. Llewellyn-Bowen cock-up someone else's house.

As for which version to get, much as I'd love the PAL version with the Shirow artwork, it's rare, and goes for up to £150! Methinks I'll stick with the nice cheap 60Hz US version for now.

I recently picked up this game (new and sealed) from a german seller
for around £25, I had just missed out on another sealed copy from a uk
seller. With all this talk of copies going for £150, could I perchance have a
'less than official' copy? It all looks the part, from the spinecard right down
to the virgin questionare card.
Lords of thunder is shockingly easy, I finished it on my first go, never saw
the continue screen. It seems extra energy always turns up at the right
moment, and I managed to mostly decimate the final boss with a couple
of smart-bombs, which is unheard of in even the earliest shooters.
Great music tho' the intro tune is really head-banging stuff.
Slightly off topic, I've managed to pick the 'holy trinity' of mega cd shooters
(pal Robo-aleste, keio flying squadron and Lords of thunder)
Was there ever a uk release of bari-arm/android assault?
Or will I have to put up with my doctored Jap version?

I can't remember where I saw some one reckoning on the £150 price, but going by what people spend on rare PAL Mega CD games, it wouldn't surprise me if someone did pay that for a mint complete copy.

£25 sounds like a cracking deal. I can't see anyone going to that much effort to make a bootleg. There is a mint one on Ebay right now, we'll just see what that goes for.

And no, according to the PAL Mega CD Library there is no UK Bari Arm/Android Assault.

Aaron Nanto covers a few things, but certainly not everything. Most of his comparisons are merely to do with the colour usage between each version.

I could make my own review of both games, just give me a video program that records what's on my computer screen to a video file. :)

Well, you're in luck. That may have been the case years ago but now it goes for the decent sum of ~$50 tops complete with spine (or even new).

Well, they did degrade the heroic fantasy theme by adding some crappy narrator at the intro & re-arranged it so that the intro sequence would play only after the title screen, messing up the cool mood of the game that way.
Also the remixed audio tracks weren't as catchy as the DUO version & the in-game colours & graphics, were a bit washed out compared to the DUO.
Also the game was much easier & could easily be 1'cc by anybody that had mastered the DUO version.

But it was not a horrible game in any way.
Much more enjoyable than some of the other SEGA CD shooters like:
Keio Flying Squadron, Robo Aleste & Silpheed imo.
Saint Dragon - AMIGA - Jaleco 1989
