Attending the 2013 California Extreme show July 13-14th?

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

The 16th annual California Extreme show will be held at the Santa Clara convention center on July 13-14th, 2013. I'll definitely be there for both days with some mystery arcade shmup PCBs showcased indeed.

The grand prize that was chosen at last year's 2012 CAX show, the winner picked out the brand new pinball machine -- it still had the Stern registration papers placed inside the coinbox on Sunday afternoon. Got to try it out at least once.

Are you attending and/or bringing in any cool arcade shmups/candy cabs?

Here's an HD vimeo vid of last year's 2012 CAX show...you might recognize some of your favorites in there. I'm not the person whom made this video but am mere linking it here for posterity -- http://vimeo.com/50727708

Probably will check it out for at least one day, if someone's bringing cabs I can help with the PCBs like last year.

May or may not be there this year. The past few years it's been automatic and I've scheduled days off of work to be there, but it looks like money's gonna be tight in the next couple months, if work comes up on those days I can't afford to miss it.

One day some of us need to pick a year to bring our stuff. A good chunk of CAX could be candy land.

Yep, it's a legendary shmupper at the 0:49 time code mark indeed. Fascinating to learn that the camera man is holding a Steadycam device film the HD video.

I'll be there, missed last year. I tried to get a room this time at the Hyatt, but they were all sold out... damn. Anyone know what shmups will be on display this year? It'd be nice to practice for them in advance... a friend and I have been working on 2P clears, would be cool to show off. Somehow I doubt Battle Bakraid will be there. ;)

Still up in the air about this one, both in attending and whether or not myself and Kenchan will bring along some cabs. If we did, there would be a few more candies available.
It may just be me and my girlfriend this year...I at least want her to go, she's a retro gaming nut as well, and would have a lot of fun. I'll probably find things out in a few weeks.

Transporting the cabs will be a definite road block as well, it looks like. The usual truck has seen better days.

I'll be there.

Also, over on KLOV there are a few of us trying to make sure we have enough boards and cabs to have a 32 player Street Fighter Hyper Fighting tournament. Not a sanctioned event, just a bunch of guys having fun. Looking for people that can help supply cabs and or boards for this hopeful event.

Here's the link to the thread over there.

Have an extra 2013 California Extreme weekend pass good for both days if anyone wants it. Please PM me and we'll go on from there.

Just found out about the cool films that will be shown in their entirety at the upcoming 2013 CAX show:

----------------------------------------
Sunday, July 14 2013
CA EXTREME FILM FESTIVAL

Noon-2 PM
THE VIDEO CRAZE: WHERE WERE YOU IN '82? (90 mins)
The story of those of us who were the first to look into the neon haze of a vector/raster monitor screen and fall in love. The first quarter poppers. The "Vidiots" who never grew up. It's a film about you. It's the story of us. Danzara's film seeks to show that many aspects of today's gaming scene are firmly rooted in the arcade culture of the 1980's. And he believes for this film to fulfill its destiny, it must focus not only on the games and the arcades themselves, but on the actual people who were first to embrace the worldwide video game culture, capturing their memories and feelings on film as an oral history for future generations to study.
Directed by Dave Danzara.

Director Dave Danzara and Assistant Director Natalie Rossetti will be in attendance to answer questions afterwards.

2-3 PM
Two shorts from Anna Newman

WADE KRAUSE: PINBALL ARTIST
A short documentary profiling master screenprinter, craftsman and Pinball Artist, Wade Krause.

From his crowded workshop in a rural California rodeo town, artist Wade Krause designs and creates everything pinball. Unwilling to let pinball die at the hand of video games, Wade crafts high end restorations of antique pinball machines and collaborates with pop artists like Dirty Donny on custom art games. Wade is one of the leading craftsman of New Pinball; enter his mad scientist pinball lab and see what is behind the multicolored backglass.

PINBALL DONUT GIRL
When a frat boy wearing a tutu meets a pinball-playing townie girl, their world tilts. A short romantic comedy with beautiful pinball footage, custom and classic games, an Jane Wiedlin (Star Trek, The Go-Go's). Funded by pinball lovers from around the world.

Discussion of both films will follow.

3-4:30 PM
100 YEN: THE JAPANESE ARCADE EXPERIENCE
a Brad Crawford film

100 Yen is a historical documentary about the evolution of arcades and the culture surrounding it - from the birth of arcades to the game centers that still thrive today. With a predominant focus on the three major arcade genres, Shooting games, Fighting games and Rhythm games, 100 Yen explores the culture and evolution of arcades through the past and present. All filmed on location in Japan, Canada, and the USA featuring interviews with industry professionals, game programmers and designers, casual gamers and gaming icons.

4:30-6:30 PM
THE SPACE INVADERS: IN SEARCH OF LOST TIME (85 mins)
Jeff Von Ward

This award-winning documentary charts the rise and fall of arcade video games and their surprising second life in basements and garages all across the country. Musician Jean Baudin will play original music before the screening. Director Jeff Von Ward and game collectors interviewed in the film will be in attendance to answer your questions afterward.

This looks like fun. I will search out the candy cab setups on Sunday as well as 70's pinball games I used to play at the local 7-11.

At last years 2012 CAX event, all the candy cabs were located against the eastern facing wall section of the huge gaming room floor. An unprecedented grand total of three different DDP boards were showcased: DDP-SDOJ, DDP-DOJ BL & DDP-DFK version 1.5 PCBs were shown for both days indeed. This was a new record for three different DDP at a CAX show, something that has never been done before in the history of past CAX shows. Someone else brought in a Cave ESP.ra.de PCB as well but that was just for one day on Saturday. There was a Neo-Geo MVS setup with MVS Fast Striker ver. 1.5 up & running as well for both days.

Changed up my plans at the last minute and attended on Saturday rather then Sunday. Had a great time meeting up with Roger, Alec, DubDubDub from Neo forums, and Papa_November, Battlesmurf, Blackoak, Louisg, and of course Mr PCEFX! from shmups forum. This was the first caextreme where I spent more time playing pinball than arcade games, probably due to the lack of shmups, but still PCEFX delivered with DOJ BL (and had dfk 1.5 on hand for Sunday).

The two most interesting games I saw at the show were: OK Baby! (right next to DOJ BL cab). I herd about this game before, but seeing how hilarious it is in person was a surpise. Also the 8 player Killer Queen homebrew game was quite the site to see, and apparently was heavily loaded with players the entire day on Saturday. I love it when indie developers truly embrace arcade style play like this (Fist Puncher last year was also another awesome indie title).

I located the lone astro cab there today and it was loaded with DDP dfk. Someone took the chair later in the day so I was playing it standing up while being bumped into by the groups of people near by. Darius was the only other more modern shmup spotted there. Was fun to see the old retro us cabs, and pinballs in attendance but I was suffering from shmup withdrawal and had to get home to play dimahoo on the new NAC.

I'm not sure on the version, there was always 2 players pumpin quarters into it. It was near the other candy cab on the streetfighter row. Megalo 410 cab I believe.

Yep, it was a G-Darius Version 2 PCB that was placed inside shmupper gibbous' Sega Megalo 410 candy cab from Sunday morning at 10:30am until 5pm (same time for the DDP-DFK v1.5 PCB as well). It rocked on the larger than life rear projection CRT screen setup. Credit fed an entire session from beginning to end on the Megalo and it was awesome.

There was a Namco Panic Park contest going on nearby gibbous' Astro City cab with DDP-DFK version 1.5 and some folks kept bumping into me as I was playing it. Need to advise the CAX staff to host such arcade game contests elsewhere as not to interfere with folks trying to get their shmup fix for next years' 2014 CAX show.

Shmupper gibbous asked me if there were more fellow shmuppers whom had candy cabs in the Bay Area, preferably ones with a 29" monitor. I said yes but it seemed that back at the 2011 & 2012 CAX shows, there were more candies up & running. For the 2013 CAX show, only a lone Sega Astro City, lone Sega Swing candy cab running Mr. Driller 2 and the Sega Megalo 410 candy cabs were on display this year.

On Saturday night, watched Dave K. get the highest score on the ol' DDP-DOJ conversion BL PCB and it was saved for posterity via backup battery. He managed to reach the Hibachi boss but got wiped out on his very last life. At various times during a heated DDP-DOJ BL session, two lines of checksum code would display next the player 2's bomb side or on top score portion of the game screen -- considered normal for a DDP-DOJ BL PCB these days. About thirty minutes later, shmupper blackoak does a warm-up round the 2nd time around on the DDP-DOJ BL board and messes up. The 3rd time, he managed to 1CC'ed it. Holy shit, to watch the DDP-DOJ BL "1 Round/Loop" 1CC in person, it was quite legendary. what's more impressive is that he later revealed to me that he hadn't played DDP-DOJ BL in over a year. Still jaw-dropping as ever.

It was a pleasure to meet shmupper parts in person. He and I both played a heated game of DDP-DOJ BL late Saturday night...it was a good game indeed.

Close to about 4:30pm on late Sunday afternoon, I managed to get the highest score of 8,0374,1415 on a single credit upon reaching Stage 5 of DDP-DFK v1.5 with C-type with Strong option selected. It was my personal best ever with that particular run (despite haven't played it in over a year with the PCB version). Took some pics as proof for posterity.

Hopefully, next year's 2014 CAX show, there'll be a larger candy cab selection with more arcade shmups to choose from. Expect the usual Cave arcade STGs to be there.

Yeah, it was great this year... except for the abysmal show of shmups! Now that I'm living in a ground level house, I'll think about bringing a couple candy cabs/pcbs next time. I wonder what happened? The pinball selection was excellent though... so many rare tables I hadn't seen/played, and in good condition too. I thought it put the Marin expo to shame. I loved Swords of Fury and Transporter.

The DOJ 1-ALL was very fun, thanks to PCFX for bringing it. I'd wanted to clear a shmup "in public" for awhile so that was a very satisfying and novel experience. I had a lot of lucky dodges... couldn't remember my old routes too well.
