Is this PVM worth buying?

Post by Skykid »

29" 2950QM:

Thing is it's super expensive (£300) and I don't know if it's worth that much? I also heard PVM's require some hoop jumping to run scart, any idea what I'd need to do?

The only thing you should need is a SCART -> BNC cable. They typically run about $30 USD.

Thanks, that sounds easy enough. Are they hard to come by?

As for this PVM, bit overpriced? I understood this was meant to be a good model.

I would not get it at that price unless you dont have access to RGB Tvs where you live.

I got a 20" PVM I found in the local news ad. I am happy because it is my only mean to display RGB here in canada.

I don't know anything about this particular model, unfortunately. I personally wouldn't spend more than $200 on any CRT, but I also live near Hollywood where these things are extremely common, and I've never sought a model larger than 20".

SCART -> BNC cables are pretty easy to get online. Here is the one I have:

It looks like the price has gone up since I got mine.

Cool, thanks for the link. There's no RGB in China, but there are other PVM's a lot cheaper (around £50), I just thought this particular model was meant to be a holy grail or something.

depends on your region i'd say. can't you compare prices with other pvms and see how they sell in the uk and in china?
i've seen a pvm 2950qm in mint condition go for 150 euros in germany, so 300pounds for one in decent condition would be way overpriced here

it has digital screen size/position adjustments which most other pvm models do not have. other than that, there's nothing special but the size about it.
it's possible that more recent models like m4/m5 and l4/l5 have easily accessable screen adjustments too.

Just seen a YT vid in action and damn, I'm tempted, looks incredible. And huge!

According to the listing the remote and speaker set are worth £160 alone... which I'm dubious about. There is a possibility that they're very sought after by gamers here though, for the RGB.

Worth a haggle at least.

Yeah its definitely a very Nice kit, would still try to lower the price.

What are those speakers btw? All I can see is that they are Sony. Are they supposed to be reference monitors?

I just looked up the specifications for the 2950QM. Seems like it has integrated stereo sound, which is cool and pretty unique as far as I know. One thing I noticed, though, is that it is only 600 line tv-resolution. At 29" it seems like a 600 line tv-res monitor wouldn't be as crisp an image as I generally expect from these high-end broadcast monitors. Is there an equivalent 800 line model, like the M2U & M4U series? That seemed to be the only downside to this beast, but would be the main thing that would steer me in the direction of too expensive.

The 2950QM was a presentation monitor. Back in the 90s you could often spot it in the back of TV studio productions. Quality is far from a production or broadcast sets like the better PVMs or even the BVMs.

The 2950QM is more less the equivalent to a great Trinitrion TV set. The 600 TVL resolution is enough to resolve all 15khz RGB sources and it gives the picture a very arcady look - not at all LCD-like as on the 20" BVM sets.

Superb info folks. I'll admit to being happy with a really good arcade monitor resolution, since that's what I'm used to, and those speakers are tempting. However, I'd probably only pay £150 + shipping (£30) and I doubt he's going to knock it down by 50%. I could probably buy a NAC from the local arcade for less than £300.

So, I need to ask, Fudoh and others, what are considered the best model PVM's in terms of picture quality (these even crisper images you speak of beyond the QM?)

I would like something in a decent size range, screen wise, but I appreciate most of them have hulking asses compared to the QM (which is surprisingly compact, probably owing to the aformentioned flatter tube.)

There are tons floating around Taobao, so if you can give me recommended version numbers, I'll start hunting.

In 4:3 and with this size, the 2950 is as good as it gets. Everything else (BVM 26 and 32" models) is 16:9 and very expensive.

The 1000-line BVM20E1U is the best that I know of, but they seem to be super rare. Its sibling, the 900-line BVM20F1U is far more common and is the best I've ever seen in person. These are both only 20" though.

Gotcha, so basically it's a size vs resolution deal. I'll scout around and try to weigh up pros and cons against price. ; )
