Re: PS4 - No Forced Online, No System-Wide Used Game DRM

Post by spadgy »

It's all public I'm certain.

Drive Club - a very technically impressive driving game, but also just another very glossy serious racing game. I did like the way the Forza Horizon-style challenges added to your team's standing. That gave the driving a bit more meaning and tension. Great looking, great car handling, but all a little familiar.

Knack - very Ratchet and Clank, and felt lovely, but the world was a bit empty. I hope with more development they fill the world with more to do.

I did touch Killzone too, but I'll hold Judgement for now. I should get into Sony's London office soon for a proper bit of play.

I also played Beyond: Two Souls for a good while, and plenty of The Puppeteer. PS3 games so I won't go into detail in this thread, but they were superb.

30FPS, they should just scrap the code and not bother.

Sadly that's going to be the future direction of this generation of consoles. Once the launch titles have passed and devs really start utilising the hardware it's likely that extra particle effects will be more important than 60fps. Sparkley graphics wow the masses more than a smooth playing experience, evidenced by the fact that some console games are anything but smooth. If you were playing them on a PC with that performance it would be time to upgrade.

It's a shame because although I'm going to get a PS4, the launch lineup really doesn't do anything for me, and driveclub was one of the few titles I was interested in, but first-hand impressions coupled with disappointing news about performance have led me to conclude that it's a bit of a turkey. I'll probably just make do with "DriveClub PS+ demo edition"

Don't think particle effects are going to be the main GPU time drain on this generation. We'll probably see a lot of titles with tessellation and more texture / post-processing effects.

Well, maybe PhysX-style physical particle interaction modeling, that could take up a big chunk of GPU time.

The NSA One Console:

The wording below the vid:
"The new music video for the NSA box. Where internet is a requirement, mandatory 24 hour check-ins in order to play games, mandatory kinect camera and microphone that are always on, and of course having to pay fees to play or borrow used games. Thank you Xbox for being the Nazis of the gaming industry."

I'm SOOO looking forward to this console :D

That kind of bait-and-switch at this point would get Microsoft crucified by consumer rights activists and pretty much everyone else.

I really doubt they'd re-activate all the DRM wackyness after the initial launch period is over.

It scares me to think that anyone would seriously want all that bullshit back again. Some of those posts make me cringe (at least, the ones that aren't obvious troll posts).

There's even some serious posts touting the 'Family Sharing' bullshit as a feature - discs already let you do this guys, sheesh. Or the possibility of lower prices... for titles with massive dev budgets, that ain't happening. Fuck, look at all the people who complain about the price of a quality title for a phone game (Dodonpachi Maximum) but won't bat an eye to buy a shitty 1$ game. There's times you get what you pay for!

One person said that going discless is more environmentally friendly... true, there's a lot of material usage in making game discs, but a pure digital console wouldn't have the longevity of consoles like the NES and SNES or arcade boards because of the risk of data loss (unless you could somehow guarantee you'd be able to download games again, even off third party locations once support for the console is officially gone?).

I've written about it before, but I wasn't able to find any reliable source stating that Family Share was actually going to be anything but demo sharing.

The name kind of underscores how out of touch Xbox's planning is with the realities of gaming. Gamers were going to set up sharing circles for their games. I'm sure there are some families where everybody shares the same Xbox system, but I don't think that's the average situation. I could be wrong, and the average Microsoftie Family looks like this:

Yes, right down to wearing knit turtlenecks and mandatory '80s hair in July 2013.

Of course this shouldn't be any surprise.

Suiciding to lower rank. Pro shit.

If I made an ad like that I'd show the kids tearing it up on the NES while mom and pop get down to some heavy shagging upstairs. Then junior runs in to tell them about his Mario 1CC just as pop blows his load all over the place (cue SMB miss jingle). Should've bought more games! Buy a robot babysitter, resurrect your 1980s sex life!

No it's a shallow jump with low inertia behind it; there's no possible arc that could be used with the goombas in that position that isn't salvageable. It isn't until ~3 seconds with a neutral pad position or ~2 seconds pressing left that it's aiming for the an hero.

And it's pathetic I know this.

*golf clap*

Swear I've heard other people saying the same thing before. Maybe I'm confusing that with this, though:
Image
I think they've got it wrong here, too. Isn't Mario using a special never-before-seen kind of fireball which may well have the ability to warp Mario through solid blocks? And heavens, just look at his angle of attack..! UNPRECEDENTED PHYSICS! Yes, Mario independently invented parkour - it was under our noses all this time and nobody ever noticed.

Somehow that's even more depressing than thinking he was about to die...especially in light of the fact that I love parkour-like platforming and have trouble appreciating all the fuss about inertia-based platforming.

Not to mention the Super Mario/Duck Hunt cart outside the system, and the that the zapper is shown along with the other controllers (and it's not clear in the picture which controllers are hooked up). Gotta love those old school ads.

So, Microsoft has pulled yet another 180 with this system, and it will work without Kinect: http://www.gamespot.com/news/xbox-one-w ... ct-6412848

Given that information, I'd love to see Microsoft come out with a sku that doesn't include the Kinect. I won't be surprised if they do, at this point.

Almost forgot about this thread. So the console is basically now completely back to bog-standard basics. Buy games, buy and sell used games, ignore Kinect, go online when you feel like it.

Hmm.

I think the bad press has sullied their opportunity for any kind of head start and the specs are slightly lower, so I think the PS3 (which isn't the size of a paving slab, either) is still tastier. Hopefully its controller won't such balls.
