How do u know that u really love shmups?

Post by tehkao »

Sorry if this is a corny topic, but I was thinking about this question the other day, and what I realized is....if I was stuck all by myself in a foreign country, in some strange new place, or in the middle of nowhere.....all I would need is a shmup and I would feel at home. I think that was the key. Shmups make me feel AT HOME. It makes the other concerns of life seem insignficant. I guess that's why the "What shmups would u take to a deserted island" topics are so popular, because that's how much we really value these games...because it brings us joy and comfort no matter what place and situation we are in...

I know I love shmups because they are the only games that I still play besides RPGs. RPGs are great, but there is no replay value. When ever I go to an arcade, I just look for the shmups they have and can spend hours there playing the same shmup over and over. I think you put it best "I feel at home".

You know you love shmups when playing shmups and hanging out on this forum is your main hobby.
You know you love shmups when most of your entertainment dollars go toward shmups.
You know you love shmups when you play them almost exclusively even though your scores are near or at the bottom of the high-score lists.
For all these reasons I know that I love shmups. And I enjoy corny topics as well.

When you spend $100 on a replay DVD and CD to a game which has no home version for you to possibly buy.

Umm... when you read the shmup forums and gobble up shmup news despite having little to no time to play any video games, let alone shmups :(

Also when you walk into a modern video game store and in two minutes you're walking out cursing silently to yourself, wishing you could go back in time to the first time you played Gradius on nintendo 15 years ago, to a time when shmups were plentiful, and a time when popular shmups actually made it out of Japan. Not that I mind importing shmups, but it means there's no growth or sustaining of shmup culture in the west at all, which sucks.

If I am not playing shmups for a long time (because of work) and I start to feel something missing from my life, then I start playing them and feeling happy again, then I know I love shmups

because I have to buy a console or mod existing one only to play a shmup, from that I know I love them

because I bought arcade cabinet and had jamma/psx conversion built; only to have proper tate mode - from that I know I love them

I don't get to sit down and play much anymore - if I do, I'd prefer it to be like a 3 hour session where I rotate between all of my games - but I just don't have the time anymore. But for some crazy reason, checking the forums is something routine I do every morning after reading the news and before checking the weather. And I'm still always checking Play-Asia, NCSX, and Cocoebiz for appearances of anything new shmup-related. This is the only genre that does this to me. Good ol' shmups

I think this question can be better answered by...

WHY DO YOU LOVE SHMUPS?

I would states why I love shmups later for it will be a long post and it is already late at night here in South China Sea.

So, why do you guys love palying shmups over other genres?

Because you have an extra TV that is always set on its side.... possibly larger than the one you watch TV on.

How do u know that u really love shmups? When you spend more time playing them than talking about them, and not to hoard 4.897.845.794 shooters that never get played only to sit on a shelf looking pretty and now and again get listed in collection threads saying "i own evey cave pcb/saturn shooter/ps2 shooter etc.. :?

When you can die over and over and over again and never get pissed. Okay, you can get pissed at the thousandth time, but that's just once.

And when years pass by, you've realized you're still playing the same game you bought so many years ago, while some of the newer games you bought for your next generation system are collecting dust.

Quite right I got killed in Kyukyoku Tiger more time than I can reminder, I never get mad once. I only said "this game is real hard" to myself when I die, and keep playing. :o

Only just start to think about it. Why doesn't I get mad? :? I get mad when I die in Rockman, after a couple of times I get annoyed and switch back to be blown up in Kyukyoku Tiger...

Well not actually the case but quite close. You see, my PS2 is current acted as my Audio CD Player, while my MegaDrive is hooked up to the TV to act as game console... I found my PS2 got more time playing music than running games...

I am currently thinking of might be I should hook up the audio of my PS2 via the optical audio port. :o Yes, I know there is not many games support optical audio port, but since my PS2 is doubled as my Audio CD player, it might worth to do so...

What would I need to hook up via the optical audio port? I only know I cannot connect the PS2 directly to a pair of PC speckers (my current setup) if I was to use the optical audio port. :?

BTW, does the PS2 remote control got short cut buttons for Audio CD player functions? If it does I might got one, as using a Hori RAP to control an Audio CD player is really stubid :? , especially when the said "Audio CD player" is not connecting to a TV or monitor...

Well, simple, because you love shmups

I was watching a friend of mine play through Ikaruga until he reached the later stages where he began to die once every 2-3 seconds. With every death, he seemed to sigh heavily while rolling his eyes as if someone with muddy shoes stepped on his toe. After continuing for the 5th time on a boss, he decided to give up, and I jumped in and tried to play through where he left off, dying about as much as he did. He noticed I never got angry even though I probably died more than he did as I neared the last stage (I'd sometimes laugh when I died). He then goes, "Man, you have hella patience for this game."

Another friend once told me that the key to long lasting relationships pretty much relies on how much you can tolerate the other person. I believe there's more to it than just that, but it rings so true, especially with shooters. If I play a sports game or even a real time strategy, if I lose even once, I feel like breaking something. For a shooter, I'll only feel like smashing something if I've placed expectations on myself to get that far on a certain day and I fail--and even then, it's just simple frustration. Pretty much about 100% of the time I play a shooting game, I lose, because I can never one credit it, yet I love it, even when the game ends with me unable to finish it and win. But then again, if you can simply beat your last score, even if you've only made it to the second stage, I guess you can say you've "won" for that evening. I guess it's all in the mindset.
