NEC XM2950 Turns Off and On...But only sometimes
Hi gang,
My NEC XM2950 I purchased recently has a tendency to turn itself off and then immediately turn itself back on again at the most inopportune moments. This happens fairly infrequently and there does not seem to be any rhyme or reason as to it when this will occur, sometimes it happens within the first minute of play, other times after 3 hours of flawless operation. So far I have been using it exclusively with an Xbox 360 via VGA and SLG-3000.
Anybody have this happen to them, or know what the likely cause could be?

Don't worry about it. You can travel from the Milky Way to Andromeda and back 1500 times before the sun explodes.

How easily can the psu be replaced, or if I took the back off would there be something I could readily recognize as being wrong like a fuse, bulging capacitor....
Re: NEC XM2950 Turns Off and On...But only sometimes
replacing the whole psu might be difficult as repair parts probably aren't easy to find nowadays. you won't be seeing much by taking off the back because these monitors are PACKED with pcbs and cables. just getting to the psu would take you a while, actually.K-2 wrote:Crap.ryu wrote:i'd have the psu checked by an expert

Actually try to replace the power cable first and make sure it's plugged in securely. I remember I had this sort of problem with my XM29 also. I haven't used it in a while tho so not sure if it's still doing it.

Re: NEC XM2950 Turns Off and On...But only sometimes
I set it up with a heavy duty surge protector with battery backup, as where I'm located our electricity has been know to flicker. I did get a flip on and off after the second day of this setup so it seems to be acting a bit better and it seems act better if I turn every thing on gradually i.e., turn dreamcast on, then the stereo then monitor, as everything is connected to one outlet by my media center... I could just be imagining things though. I haven't tried replacing the power cable yet, but I have checked its connection and it seems secure.
I'm a bit hesitant on packing it up bringing it to a tv tech for a few reasons, one being that it's so damn heavy, 2nd that my local Tv repair guys are either thieves or octogenarians, and lastly lets say the expert takes it all apart and says my psu is dying and then what?... I might just have to live with it.

but yeah i wouldn't bring the whole monitor to some random tv tech guy. even if someone could handle taking apart the nec they'd definitely charge you a fortune for it

The plot thickens...
So when I got this monitor it didn't come with a remote. Now, having bought a replacement remote it appears that the infrared sensor on the monitor itself is broken. I know it's not the remote because it works on a 2nd xm2950 I own. The question is now is there any way of adjusting the image without the remote?
I'm beginning to think that this monitor will be designated to parts soon.

i don't think so. when i opened my xm2950 i wasn't seeing anything inside that would let me easily do any kinds of adjustmentsK-2 wrote:The plot thickens...

Why not replace the infrared sensor? I'd be sure it's a common off-the-shelf part. If it's not, I'd be extremely surprised.

he'd have to take apart the whole monitor to get there. if he's not experienced with electronics this would likely take him a few days.trap15 wrote:Why not replace the infrared sensor? I'd be sure it's a common off-the-shelf part. If it's not, I'd be extremely surprised.

I'm going to talk it over with the local old guy Tv repair man. He helped me with my WG 7000 a couple years back hopefully he's still alive.
