Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?

Finished Aqua Knight.
Well, it's a bit of a shame, since Battle Angel: Last Order is a really vapid and deadheaded follow up to BAA, as previously noted, and has lost a great amount of character. More surprising is that Kishiro put Aqua Knight on a THIRTEEN YEAR HIATUS so he can work on Last Order, which, for all intents and purposes, appears to be the worst thing he's done. And it's still ongoing. Baffled.

However, Aqua Knight is a little gem.
It's only three volumes long, and as he knew he was about to suspend (ditch) it, it finishes on a note that doesn't do too much open endedness. But the imagination and humor is really delicious: a world covered in water, knights who fight on the ocean bed in armour that resembles diving suits, portals to summon armies of the dead, genius inventors searching strange lands, breasts, penises, and batshit insane characters.
One of the most colourful things I've ever had the pleasure of reading in black and white. There's no way Kishiro should have dropped it for Last Order (unless LO was amazing, which it isn't). So sad.

I finished the 2nd Volume of Alita (in other words the stuff covered in the OVAs). There really is a lot more depth and sadness in the manga, though the OVAs are by no means bad.

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
So I watched more episodes of the Three Kingdoms anime... I just got past episode five.
And... despite my initial misgivings, so far I'm actually kinda liking it. The "pacifist" portrayal of Liu Bei gives way in the second episode and becomes more like he is in the book. They still make changes to the story every once in awhile, but they're changes to make the story work in its new medium (the episode where Zhang Fei beats the government inspector is just four paragraphs in the book... here, there's an entire episode leading up to it).
I was worried that they would fuck Cao Cao (my favorite) up, but actually, so far he's been pretty cool. The only major change is that they try hard from the first to make it clear he's an ambitious schemer who has no real loyalty, whereas the book was pretty vague about that. Still... Cao Cao in any form is a treat.
Gonna watch more.

Not by any stretch, it's awesome. Just too short.Raytrace wrote:I finished the 2nd Volume of Alita (in other words the stuff covered in the OVAs). There really is a lot more depth and sadness in the manga, though the OVAs are by no means bad.
Read about ten more Last Order chapters yesterday. When the first arc ends and Gally leaves Salem things marginally improve. It takes ages, but if you can read through to the battle chamber stuff in space, it starts to pick up and Kishiro gets some of his groove back.

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
yeah the Alita OVAs are great.
I started watching Getter Robo, it seems a lot more detailed storywise even from episode 1 than Mazinger Z. The art is also at the level that Mazinger Z doesn't really have untill about episode 20. Interesting- (well to me it is haha).

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Does anyone know of any anime that are similar in tone or feel to Capcom's Onimusha games?
Played them recently, love it, and I just want more quick-to-the-blade samurai action, preferably with a historical setting. Paranormal elements optional but highly recommended. I prefer something that's not too goofy.
Also I love Rurouni Kenshin.

Intrigue in the Bakumatsu – Irohanihoheto, Shigurui and maybe Basilisk (it has ninjas, not samurais).
Or you can just read Blade of the Inmortal, it's the best samurai manga series ever.

^ Don't watch the anime (I mean it!). It's a pile of shit and they ruined the opportunity. Not worth your bandwidth.

reading Battle Angel Alita Vol.3 while listening to nothing but Underground Resistance 12"s - pure techno heaven
seriously I can't stop being amazed by the art in this.

Just finished Fantasy World Jun by Ishinomori. The genius did it again, loved it, specially this thought about manga: "Even if you just keep improving your drawings, if the ideas don't follow..."

Now starting to read Shimamoto's re-imagination of Ishinomori's Skullman.

Of cyberpunky or sci-fi feel, are there other classic manga that spring to mind?
I also wouldn't mind reading ones which are in same universes (or indeed the originals) of anime I've watched.
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?

Dang, you read my mind KAI. I've been reading Ishinomori Shotaro's Way of Ryuu or Ryuu no Michi...SO GOOD. You can see Tezuka's influence since Ishinomori was one of his assistants...but OH his backgrounds and landscapes, they are like looking at abstract art. So much labor and love went into these panels. I also am really into his "Sabu to Ichi Torimonohikae" Do you have any other older manga artist recommendations?

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Out of curiosity, watched the first episode of Watashi ga Motenai no wa Dou Kangaete mo Omaera ga Warui! - Watamote for short...
Being a huge social recluse in my teens (and to an extend I still am), this show hits too close to home for me. I can totally relate to the poor girl. Will keep an eye on this show.
Also lol @ the Ouran High School and Death Note references in the episode.

Yep, watamote was surprisingly fun, a friend told me the manga is also good.

If you didn't watch Little Witch Academia yet, they plan to take it down from Youtube any day now, so go watch it ASAP.

Meeeh, why did they have to take it down? I still cringe whenever I remember the fall scene.
I lost interest in the Watamote mango after a few episodes. Is the show vastly better?

Thank goodness for Miro and other various Youtube downloaders, now it's safely on my laptop. Much better than hoping it's still on Youtube tomorrow or something.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
I'm getting to the end of Mospeada- I do like it, but it seems to have some very strange pacing, usually on the 'home straight' of say episode 19-25/26 in an anime they're totally on the 'finish the main arc/resolve questions' bit, but no Mospeada still has a very relaxed feel and had a blatantly one episode self contained story too! Though I did like it a lot ('Rainy Boy' episode). Was it cut short early or something?, cos seriously it feels like the creators are at least expecting a 30 episode run the way it feels atm.
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Awkward review tonight.
I gave Steins;Gate a second chance (I think I was watching the Sub before, and in my old age the threshold for subworthy is unrealistic)... and I don't hate it. And I'm not ashamed for not hating it.
Chaos;Head is much closer to jank however. I wanted them to explore the horror murder mystery or imagination-is-real aspects of the thing, but it boiled down to a tepid pile after the start.

PSX Vita: Slightly more popular than Color TV-Game system. Almost as successful as the Wii U.
