I haven't played actual d&d since I was in high school. At 40 I'd feel like even more of a loser, but if I knew the right people I'd totally be down. Especially since now it would be augmented with beer.

Yeah well im 32 the people i play with are pretty cool ranging from about 25 to 45. I would say none of them are social outcasts all of them are pretty cool but we do enjoy these games.
the last game I played was Principa Malifex. a devious little RPG.

I tried to play these once, but... I just didn't see the appeal.
Then again, maybe I was just playing with uncreative dolts.

Have a few adventures under my belt, but we all grew up and no one has time for that anymore. One of my buddies still plays occasionally and even invited me to his group, but ended up turning it down. Not only I wouldn't be able to attend, I don't think it appeals to me anymore.

Re: Do you play table top RPGs like Dungeons & dragons?
I jused to play alot of Tabletop RPGs when I was younger, but almost all of my gaming friends stopped playing when pc and videogaming became more popular.
I would love to start playing again, but I can't find friends that wanna play, I been looking into alot of Virtual stuff for PC over internet, but I dont know feels like the atmophere is going to change alot.
Games I used to play was:
Drakar och Demoner (Think of it like Swedish version of D&D but more in woods and stuff like that)
Mutant (Also a Swedish RPG set in a apocalyptic future where you play like Mutated animals and stuff with alot of cool powers)
Call of Cthulhu ( My favorite one, but my bad knowldge of english and not enough people liking the Lovecraftian setting as much as me, so didnt play it that much)
Can't remember the name but it was some kind of cybepunk one, was real awesome, heavely influensed by William Gibson.

I prefer modern fantasy like World of Darkness and Shadowrun, but those types, lots. My favorite being Mage: The Awakening.

I've really wanted to play Shadowrun, but it's hard to find dedicated groups. D&D seems to be more popular (as rare as tabletopping is, anyways).

I just walked past a new game store in my area to get dinner. The place was packed with people shopping and playing. It looked like they were having a good time.

I've always wanted to play a P&P RPG, just never came across a group keen on it. Although I have a feeling it'd feel a bit awkward, like that time I tried cybersex in junior high.

But just try it, dont be afraid, you may like it or you may not, only if you try it you'll know

Re: Do you play table top RPGs like Dungeons & dragons?
I started really late with 3.5, but I mainly played a bunch of 4th edition. Had a pretty good group going with friends the past couple of years, even DMing a bit myself. I got burned out over time. Conceptually it's awesome, but yeah, you really need the right group of people. It got to the point where we were starting a new campaign every few sessions because no one gave a shit. Also, it seems like every little turd that hears of D&D and hasn't played feels like they need to join in, making single turns last 45 minutes with large groups. Hours spent teaching idiots, only to have them quit within a couple of weeks. I'm still so bitter from so many sour sessions that I'll probably never play the goddamn game ever again.

I used to run D&D campaigns, 2nd edition and later 3rd. I was always the dungeon master since I'm not very good at roleplaying. I used to write elaborate soundtracks for the games... a lot of silly stuff, and it wasn't spit-shine polished, but it was fun. Perhaps I'll upload it sometime.
Its SO much effort to put something fun together, though, that I eventually just lost steam and stopped DMing. I try to start up now and again but its just a mountain of work. I was blessed to have a lot of great players to work with, so I rarely had a bad game. One of my closest friends still plays every week, mainly Requiem now, but also pathfinder and 3.5ish stuff.

Re: Do you play table top RPGs like Dungeons & dragons?
I am blessed with a group of two vet GMs. I have had the pleasure of playing a really well run game of Call of Cthulhu and Shadow run.
one of the DMs is really good at horror and suspense since he is a horror film fanatic the other is really in to his LOTR style books and such but ran a mean Shadowrun game also. everyone is pretty creative with there characters. Right now everyone is just writing up write up for the characters and such and im tweaking them to fit in with the up and coming game.
I played a lot in highschool but droped it in college when there was no one about. answered a couple of personal adds about D&D games going in neighbouring towns and one of my friends who I used to run games with in Highschool I bumped in to on the bus and he invited me. Pretty much done this for the past three years every thursday. I mean some people go to the Gym or go to see bands but i get togther with a few mates and tell a grand story. its great. also gotten me back in to reading books again which is not a bad thing.

I bought all the manuals, dice, and whatnot. But was unable to convince anyone to play it. All anyone ever want's to play is Life or some dumb shit like that.
Re: Do you play table top RPGs like Dungeons & dragons?
Basically my experience as well, unfortunately. The shitty sessions seem to really overpower the great ones, which certainly doesn't help.drauch wrote:I started really late with 3.5, but I mainly played a bunch of 4th edition. Re: Do you play table top RPGs like Dungeons & dragons?
I hear that WotC has finally put the classic PDF's back online (I guess they finally accepted that the torrents of them all would always be out there anyway)
I only ever played Basic D&D, and never really felt restricted. The DM's imagination should be able to provide all the depth required. I read that this latest edition really isn't even D&D anymore.
I would like to find a group to play with (SF bay area), but right now I'm just waiting for my kids to get old enough to play. I'm still surprised that there is no online webcam based campaign client, for playing with all your old friends remotely. WotC had one in the works, but never really finished it IIRC.
Edit: hmmm, what's this?: http://www.rptools.net/
must have missed that

Re: Do you play table top RPGs like Dungeons & dragons?
I played D&D with an OK group once. We had fun, but combat still moves way too slow for my tastes. The fact that the emphasis is on storytelling rather than actual gameplay also annoyed me, mostly because all we ever did was Steal Things And Break Stuff (S.T.A.B.S.). Sure, it was fun, but one player made sure to duck and stand for a dodge bonus every turn because he had boots that allowed him an extra free action. If we're going to do stupid stuff like that, why don't we just play Diablo and shit a thousand lightning bolts every time we shoot an enemy?
I was also involved with Battletech and Warhammer 40K at one point. Tabletop miniature wargames are an entirely different beast, and one I'd not like to revisit, especially when I could have converted that money into far better things. Same goes for Magic, Mage Knight, Pokemon, and all the other weird stuff that was designed to eat money in a far more disastrous fashion than any video game, barring the occasional Midway quarter muncher. Ogre, on the other hand, is a game you can play for something like four dollars, and I know one of you is bored enough to come up with a long-term military campaign with branching paths for it.

Why is it called the Vic Viper/Warp Rattler? Because the Options trail behind it in a serpent-like fashion, and the iconic front fins are designed to invoke the image of a snake's fangs.

I played a small bit of d&d 2nd edition 20 + years ago and a smaller bit of Shadowrun, both were great fun.

D&D Bah. I'm a grown man. I only play arcade games and Wii.
EDIT: In all seriousness, my mother banned me from playing D&D. While her heart was in the wrong place, it probably didn't hurt me in getting laid at a sooner point in life rather than a later one.

Re: Do you play table top RPGs like Dungeons & dragons?
I played D&D seriously from about the ages of 10-13, GMing for most of that. Played a little bit of 3rd edition when that came out but not much. I initiated a self-imposed armistice of geekery around about the time I discovered booze and drugs, meaning I gave up on stuff like anime, videogames and pen & paper RPGs. Now I've been getting back into this stuff in a big way, starting with STGs, which sort of led to 1st person dungeon crawlers, and now I'm even dabbling a bit in D&D again.
My big problem with modern D&D is it seems more like a war game. I think using miniatures in D&D as anything more than a glorified initiative tracker is simply against the spirit of the game, and forces a very real disconnect from the role playing experience. What a lot of people don't seem to realise is that D&D really isn't about stats and rules, despite the heft of the rulebooks. I guess you can play it however you want it, but given you can technically do ANYTHING in the game, it's strange how a lot of campaigns just turn into a Wizardry simulator and nothing else.
I'm toying with the idea of getting into Cyberpunk 2020, but I think the effort in getting a game off the ground might be too much.

Played a lot of Top Secret (1987 S.I. version). Really liked percentage roll systems at the time. I ended up modifying the skill sets to go with other themes; fantasy, ninjas, scifi, etc.

Re: Do you play table top RPGs like Dungeons & dragons?
I got in on tabletop gaming late but I'm passively interested in it - I'm the kind of person who prefers story over numbers so I tend to roll up characters based on storytelling concepts and flavor as I think of them without even worrying about whether they'll see use or not, as well as lean towards systems that only have enough rules to keep mary-sues down. That doesn't mean much in practice, granted, as the few campaigns I've participated in so far have mostly been D&D3.5 and Pathfinder (which can be a fair bit arbitrary and convoluted), but I don't the happy middle they represent compared to, say, GURPS, which I stay clear from because a fair number of my simulationist tabletop-liking friends sit and discuss the system like amateur philosophy all the fucking time.
Currently, I'm in one active Pathfinder campaign, homebrew setting, fantasy level way up (and upside-down!), but it gives an interesting perspective to the plot elements, and the players all involved are quite interested in the roleplaying elements rather than the dicerolling - we've had a couple sessions where the only rolls made were the rare skill check, as most of it was instead spent in character interaction and plotbuilding.

Back when i was a kid i used to play Warhammer and MERP (and a bit of Blood Bowl on the side) - the wife dipped her toe in about 10 years ago and we had a few games, but not really got back into it.

Re: Do you play table top RPGs like Dungeons & dragons?
I used to DM D&D, TMNT (Palladium) and a couple of others, as well as Battle Tech, which is obviously a board game rather than an RPG, (although Mechwarrior filled that spot I guess) about 20 years ago. But I haven't role played in years, instead turning my attention towards tactical minatures board games.
So these days I play Dust Tactics, which is some serious pimp shit when it comes to models, Tannhauser (Weird War II themed squad-level tactical action game), Super Dungeon Explore (themed like a JRPG but plays more like Smash TV or Gauntlet), and I have Earth Reborn but have not yet played that one, although I'm told it is one of the best of it's type.
All great games to play, although it can be quite an expensive hobby - I must have spent over a grand on Dust Tactics alone

Well, just looking at my Dust gear, about 90% of what actually hits the table as part of a force is stuff bought through expansions, the Core Set will entertain you for a bit, but if you like the game you are going to be up for some serious cash.
But I guess Dust Tactics is more of a minatures game (like WH), but played on a grid. Most other modern thematic board games tend to be pretty complete out of the box, with expansions only adding to the experience rather than being 'essential'.
These being analog games, you are paying for your immersion piece by piece, which is going to be expensive compared to DLC add-ons for a PS3 FPS for example. It costs a lot to produce good mini sculpts, after all. Having said that, the average high production board game won't cost much more than a new release AAA console title. Let's not even get into overpriced retro collecting in regards to a comparison

-WARNING- DOUBLE POST INCOMING
As far as actual pen 'n paper RPGs go, money should not be an issue, since just a core rule book and a campaign should be all you would need, along with skilled DM. Of course you can spend moreif you want, but it's not essential in RPGs. I mean we used to write our own campaigns for goodness sakes, we never even bought one adventure for D&D. Game Mastering is quite a finely tuned skill that needs to be honed, and if done correctly will provide a more immersive experience than any movie or vidya game ever could.
It's a lot of effort, and you need a player character group that is willing to work with you to run the machinery of the game smoothly enough that total immersion is maintained, but if you can pull it off it's a very rewarding experience for everybody involved.
I just can't be bothered anymore - that's why I shifted over to thematic board games. You still get the whole social aspect with people laughing (and crying) while they roll buckets of dice, but no worrying about new players being jack asses or the DM having a bad acting day or whatever.
I also like the fact that these games require the understanding of sometimes ambiguous and complex rulebooks - this eliminates the chance of stupid people being involved
