Note to ShmupMAME users: this game doesn't work in ShmupMAME due to a silly bug, you'll have to use mainline MAME or MAMEPlus.

(Fortunately, even if it did work in ShmupMAME, it isn't one of the games that would have any input delay improvements)

also you might just want to play a Metallica CD instead of putting up with the quality of the sound emulation ;-)

I should have tried to fix the sound emulation for this before the week started, since I have a board I could do testing and stuff on. Oh well. It's worth hearing just for some of the hilarious solos and stuff that come out utterly atrocious on their sound chip and sound font, which I heavily suspect to be just MS General MIDI.

Yeah, my server is down right now. I'm trying to get it back up, but I don't have any ETA. I am still tracking scores locally, so nothing is going to be lost.

Hmm, if the Wyvern Wings high score thread is any indication, then it looks like you need to clear the first loop (and then some) to have a chance of hitting a million. That's setting the bar high for this week! :)

Mm, I may end up changing this one too. I wasn't too sure of this one, and I didn't have time before the week to try to make sure it was good like I did last week. For now just expect it to stay at 1 mil :)

Mind you, having said that it's a tall order, I expect chum will probably manage to clear both loops by the end of the week...

I was playing Wyvern Wings on MAME 0.149 i played around 7 credits total without resetting once and on the last credit i got this screen about 30 seconds in on stage 1-1

I didn't do anything unusual that i hadn't done on a credit before that, just a heads up.

Does anybody know if there's a bonus for no bombing and picking an extra bomb when you're maxed? Same for Power up items (I know the U icon has a 5000 bonus after you reach lvl 3)

interesting, nobody has reported that before (the protection fail)

you can 1CC it tho, so it probably only kicks in after a certain number of credits / games started (sneaky*)


* or you actually just managed to crash the game, and that's used as a generic crash message

Looks like this happens after exactly 1 hour of uptime. At least that's when it happened to me (using latest version of MAMEPlus).

My emulator is just straight up muting the sound on this one and it's making it kind of difficult to stay interested when combined with the first two stages being completely mindless :(

I'll keep at it though, I'm sure it picks up.

alright, interesting into about the protection fail, that's one way to avoid early detection! will look at it some day...

sound, make sure you're using a fairly recent version ( MAME 0.146u5 or newer ) and have the sound turned up

I've lowered the GET BONUS to 600,000 to make it a bit less absurd to achieve :lol:
Additionally, this week will 'overlap' the next one by one day, in order to make up for the lost time for me being dumb.

I get sound using MAME Plus! 0.149 (Jun 20 2013) and yes, I can hear the solos :lol:

The guitar sounds more like farting in the UFO boss theme (edit: shared by all the bosses), for example. Reminds me of old PC games.
I don't know why but the sound is very quiet now. I can still hear it, just have to turn my volume up a bunch more than I'd like to get any noise. EDIT: That's strange, the Genocider stage music is louder. It's playing some channels louder than others, right?

600,000 sounds pretty doable; I get ~150K from just the first stage and a bit of the second.

Would not be surprised at all if the sprites for the boss explosion came straight out of a Strikers game (and it even does the same falling-to-earth sequence). I had to check that it wasn't just a hack of Strikers due to all the many direct similarities, but it is running on Semicom's (?) own hardware. Boy, it's a strange day when you'd rather be listening to a Psikyo soundtrack.

In terms of things I don't like - the only ship which seems usably fast is that Thunder Fox or whatever (no surprise for Clint Eastwood fans) and even in that ship collecting the bonuses is a chore. The feeling of shooting with most planes isn't very good either. Thunderfox does have delayed missiles, which don't do much damage but do give you just a little bit more time to move away from a target to sweep the screen, which is nice.

Only managed 250K so far. Lots of bullets.

I can't figure out what causes the left boss to activate in stage 6, I've tried blowing off midboss parts in a certain order and being on a certain side of the screen at certain times. Inclined to believe that which boss you face is randomly determined before/while the stage starts, since I always get the same boss starting from a savestate. Quite annoying since I want some way to practice the boss on the left if I have to face him in in a run again, but it just never activates.

If anyone does know, that would be cool. The 1-7 boss is pretty crazy and I don't think I can have enough bombs to bomb spam both that boss and the left 1-6 boss, without deaths of course. And dying before the second loop is a tragic fate.

Man, if that's true it might make this game even more Psikyo than Psikyo themselves. Not just random stage order but a random boss?

Did a couple of runs (Not one made it past 2-2...) and got the left boss every time. I don't know if my luck is just poor or if there really is something you do to activate each boss, but I think I'm starting to get a grip of the patterns anyhow, so no sweat. Quite a few safe spots around the right side of the screen, that applied to the loop version as well (although they are tougher to spot and squeeze into)

By the way, if you die right before/during the loop, you can pretty much kiss your run good bye unless you have some great dodging skills because recovering takes way too long and there's just no way to kill stuff quickly enough to avoid having to dodge a really nasty number of bullets. I don't get why they made power such a big issue in this game, so un-psikyo.

if I get a run where I don't die on 1-7, I have a decent enough shot at clearing the entire thing I think, because the loop isn't so bad with max power, provided you use bombs on certain boss phases

Two more things... One: there is no clear bonus, and picking up excess bombs is hardly rewarded: 5k only. The game is definitely designed around bomb spam on the bosses

Two: The midboss in stage 7 appears to have a glitch related to the laser, as soon as it uses the laser you may randomly die. I don't have more details on this yet, but it happened to me twice during practice and also happens to Wednesday in their run.

Are people using the Specials and Bombs/Barriers separately, or the combined MEGA CRUSH attack (or whatever it's called)? Some of the special attacks seem fairly powerful, but they tend to make the enemy bullets hard to see at times, so I often go for the B+C attack instead.

There are two supported sets for the game, I'd be interested in knowing how they differ, could be related to this.

Alternatively it could be an emulation issue, you have to remember the game runs on the Hyperstone CPU, and while the core runs a lot of games now it certainly isn't as well tested as some of the others, although the number of games with small original glitches caused by what appear to be compiler errors on the original dev kits is amusing.

Keep in mind tho, it is a low-budget Korean game, and all things considered it does a damn good job of being like some unofficial Psikyo title ;-)

This game is cool enough, makes me want to play Strikers games more, oh and Starcraft Brood War. :lol:
Is there a good spot that explains the game's systems, like special attacks and so on?
Holding off on submitting a score til I at least break 400k, figure some system info might help.

System rules: avoid all bullets for the entire duration of the game. If you get hit, you basically need to go a stage and a half before you can start doing enough damage to kill enemies again
