Multiple A/V composite cables into one television: recs?

Post by xbl0x180 »

Total n00b question here: I was wondering if there is some kind of switch box where I can connect the following:

- 360
- Another 360
- PS3
- PS2
- DVD player
- VCR
- Maybe a SNES

Does such a A/V switch exist :?: Thanks in advance 8)

Maybe this one from Monoprice?

May not have as many connections as you need, but you could buy two and daisy-chain them.

Hm, they'd have to be the yellow, red, white composite cables 8)

Follow-up questions: I said it was a n00b question initially. If you wanted to connect all those electronics to one teevee, what would you use :?:

Modern consoles: HDMI. Anything else, by order of quality: RGB ≈ component > S-Video > composite > RF.

Take in account what your TV and consoles can handle. I use S-Video for my Dreamcast, Gamecube, and PS2, on an old 29" CRT, and I'm okay with the picture quality. But here's a fact: old consoles look like shit on most modern TVs (I often hear that plasmas handle them better than LCDs).

360 via composite is some horrendous hell of rainbow banding bullshit, stay far away from that. Not just Dead to Rights: Retribution, but even games like Akai Katana.

You know the switch doesn't really care what colour the connector is, right?

Just plug your yellow composite video source cable into one of the component video input connectors (the green one, perhaps, doesn't really matter), and the corresponding output one to the composite input on your TV. And then your audio of course can go to the white/red audio connectors.

The switch doesn't do any fancy conversion, it's just a straight pass-through.

You'll probably pay just as much for a standard 3-plug composite/stereo audio A/V switch, but at least this way if you upgrade to a display with component video input you can still use it.

I would take care to try and find one that's well-constructed, though, or you can find a unit like this:

And that's a name brand.

Hm, I am thinking now of going with an HDMI splitter for the two 360s and PS3 while using a composite splitter for the DVD, VCR, and the PS2. The SNES may have to go through the old CRT I was planning to throw away. This is very informative. Please, keep suggesting and mentioning different things, as I know next to nothing about these things (everything used to be hooked up to a 25" CRT using composites) 8)

Your best bet is to take advantage of as many of the ports in the TV itself, and use a splitter for everything else. We've got a TV with multiple HDMI ports and 3 sets of composite ports, with a splitter we could get a lot of consoles hooked up, but the problem is more space for the console itself. I've not heard of a splitter/converter with that many different hookups before, and I imagine it might do some icky conversions when changing video/audio source types.

Why do you need two 360s hooked up separately? If you put them beside each other, you can simply unplug the HDMI cable at the back of one and put it into the other one when you want to switch, that way you only need one HDMI cable running for them and no need for a splitter.

One of them is a US 360 (large) for domestic games and the other is a Asia 360 (slim) for import games. The cables don't seem to be interchangeable...

Oh, I didn't realize they had a different HDMI size port (only have an american one so far). That's interesting to know.

I haven't tried. I know the power sources (bricks) are not interchangeable, but hopefully the HDMI are interchangeable. This is a really good idea 8)
