Well, I played this some more but can't figure out how to get past the stage 2 boss. Did it once by dumb luck and got to stage 4, but my score was worse and stage 4 is a nightmare without a weapon that shoots sideways.

I don't think there's any progress further from this, within the deadline time frame. Just reaching area 5 alone took a good three hours of practice.

Managed to clear stage 4, but only barely beat my last offering. Since then, I've switched from X-shot to the homing S-shot; it makes a couple of parts where I was shooting behind harder, but not as much as I thought it would. I'll now have maybe a couple of hours tomorrow morning to better this.
