I like terrible/mediocre things if they have a killer aesthetic (visuals, music, set pieces, theming, etc.) and aren't completely unplayable.

same

Related: I honestly consider Bee Storm to be my favorite DDP game.

Also, another DDP confession: I have chained up to the first midboss of DDP once. I have never been able to repeat the feat, nor do I really have much desire to.

- I want to see the final form of the Mirror of Cardinal Sins in Cardinal Sins, but Wrath is forever going to make me, well, wrathful.
- I hate playing on a keyboard. I need a keyboard or an arcade stick to play, or I'll flat out refuse to play.

Sine Mora isn't playable. The overall aesthetic isn't all that great either, just the actual graphics are.

I don't care for Ketsui.

I'm a big YGW fan but I haven't really played Ibara in a meaningful way at all. There's actually a reason for that one though.

Sine Mora was meh until I tried playing for score...then I just said to hell with this. How the fuck do you tout a gimmick as the defining feature of your game and then penalize players for using it?

* I used to hate Yagawa
* After Batrider taught me how to better appreciate Yagawa, I now love Yagawa
* Because of Yagawa I have started to hate slow moving bullet hell games
* I don't think I will ever be able to get the same enjoyment out of bullet hells again.
* Trap15 is a bastard.
* Eschatos is fucking rad.

I vastly prefer games that are easy from a survival perspective with a lot of room for scoring optimization to difficult games. Games the combine the two are fascinating to me, but I lack the focus to get invested in them.

I have an extremely hard time not playing for score, and I compulsively take risks above my skill level despite knowing that they ruin my run every time.

There are less than ten PCEngine shmups that are worth playing more than once.

I never play one game at a time, or for long periods. I played Espgaluda Arrange almost exclusively for about three weeks to get the clear; I sold it immediately after.

Sine Mora gets a bad rap.

*Danmaku/Bullet hell shooting games are ruining STGs.
*Hate most of the modern STGs which including plenty of perverted anime artwork, anime-style music, and voice acting. I don't mind characters in STGs but please it's a STG! Parodius got it down right with the anime artwork and everything else!
*G Rev > Cave
*Toaplan > Cave
*Rob's early 90s STG count down should had been: 1. Rapid Hero, 2. V-Fife, 3. Varth
*Yagawa's STGs are the anti-shmups.

- Daioujou is imo the best STG ever made
- I can't stop playing for score, even if ijust want to clear a game
- Probably never gonna play Touhou games because i hate all the fanboyism abot it
- Hate the word shmup, i feel like a shump when saying it
- I have the Espgaluda II port for almost two years now and only played like ten credits. i've even upgraded to the limited edition and still don't play it...
- Didn't like Under Defeat at first, but now i love it!
- Never understood what all the fuss is about Battle Garegga and Raiden II/DX
- i think Ikaruga is really overrated and the chaining sucks

Ikaruga is a stupid game where its main mechanic, THE THING THAT MAKES THE GAME INTERESTING, has nothing to do with score.

Touhou 13 is a better game than Battle Garegga.

I think Nin2-Jump is Ichimura's best game, and probably the best non-Yagawa CAVE game.

You get score for absorbing bullets of your own color, enough score that players milk static bullet emitters and sit in laser beams, and it's a known scoring thing in the game to milk the attacks of the last boss that rapidly switches polarities and you have to keep up. dat random Ikaruga hate.

I suppose my point is that, as the thing that MAKES THE GAME INTERESTING, it should have a more central role, as opposed to the "top off the last 5% of your score" role that it actually has.

What, it's role as being THE THING THAT KEEPS YOU FUCKING ALIVE isn't enough?

Ikaruga sucks, but that isn't why.

Interesting to who, people who don't play for score anyway and are blown away by the transform button? What "makes the game interesting" is the split in colors for everything not just the player and bullets, this split in colors is well connected the main scoring mechanic of chaining enemies of the right colors as well as the lesser bullet-eating scoring mechanic.

Y'know those homing lasers that kill a lot of enemies at once? you need to absorb bullets to fire them :o

I've never 1cc'd a shmup.

Ever.

I'm not a huge fan of bullet hell games either, I find I just glaze over when the screen gets really crazy and lose track of my ship.

That doesn't stop me from continually buying them though.... thinking I'll find that one that just really does it for me.

- My first STG is Gradius and I didn't like it.
- STG and shooter are the least retarded names to call the genre.
- I take cues from enemy spawning order and nothing else.
- Every element on the screen is a big ass moving hitbox to me, whether or not it's coated pink or death metal.

- That said, blue and pink are still the best colors to use on projectiles because you can easily tell them from each other and there usually aren't enough blue/pink background elements and enemies to clash with them. Green looks like shit in motion and low saturation colors only work if you make the rest of your game pink.

- I usually don't have the slightest idea what happens in the background or how many penises the boss I'm fighting has and whether the loads are coming out from the correct coordinates or not. I have huge respects for people who actually know these information. You have to be, like, totally not playing the games in order to notice stuff like that!

- I hate slow bullets and spot-the-background patterns.
- I hate overly slow/fast ships.
- I put ASS as my initials if I get 1st place in the Rankings.
- I don't like both of the Mushihime Ultra modes.
- I don't like the first Mushihime because I had a hard time telling which one of the green shit is my hitbox.
- I got to the final attack in DOJ White on my first try.
- I got a DDP 1-ALL in a week. Looped DOJ in a month. Cleared UFO Lunatic in 4 months.
- I hate the fact that some people actually chomp on Sine Mora's cock because of les graphiques.
- I liked the Toohoo series because each game experiments with a different mechanic.
- I believe games should be entirely about mechanics, and focusing on enemy attack, scoring systems and player reflex is the right path for the genre to take.
- Survival play should not involve memorization.
- I don't really care about a game's subgenre as long as it has the above characteristics.
- I actually like Dr. Plankton because he talks about the games all the time.

- I believe if you play any video game for or judge any video game based on the aesthetics, you are a secondary, a casual, a scrub; you are on the same level as the lowest kind of Touhou fan (the kind that fuk there favrite 2hu and boycott a game because their waifu didn't make it in), you are the reason Call of Doody gets a rehash every year and you are the very cancer that is killing video games.

- Memorization is not a skill.

that is all <3

I believe many people have forgotten the primary purpose of some of their favourite games is to make money for an arcade operator and not to bow down to their highly opinionated (and often wrong) view on what a STG should be.

Of course it is a skill. How well you can memorise something can be trained and certain people seem to be naturally better at it than others.
