My PS3's disc drive is dying. Advice?

Post by evil_ash_xero »

I hear that Sony will send you back a refurbished system with a 90 day warranty.

It's gonna cost me 100 dollars for this.

Are there really well regarded third party repair shops, that are an option? In the U.S.?
I was thinking about gophermods

+1 to gophermods. I sent them my PS3 for the YLOD fix 4 months ago, and my console is still running like a champ. Their service was fast and painless, and they offer free round-trip shipping. Turn around time took a week or two when you take into account the shipping time.

Can you describe the symptoms?

I believe they're ease to replace and somewhat cheap to boot. You have to retain the PCB from the original drive since the blu-ray drive is "married" to its original PS3.
