I've played Gradius III.

I don't talk about Gradius III.

We don't talk about Gradius III.

We don't talk about arcade Gradius III. SFC/SNES Gradius III is acceptable (just hella fucking slow).

Actually, one of my proudest shmup moments was getting past the bubble stage in the arcade Gradius III. I think I've been able to pull it off less than ten times.
And yes, Gradius III still made my vote in this year's Top 25.

Gradius III is like "haha I made it past the first level, awesome."

But the first level boss is a complete joke. I actually love that a lot of Gradius's bosses are just huge wusses, because the stages are so brutal.

Recca Summer Carnival on NES/Emulation is rather interesting, especially for an 8 bit title

My proudest moment in Gradius III (arcade) was getting to Level 7, the lava stage.

It's basically like the bubble level, except the rocks break into lesser, but indestructible pieces. Go watch Seahawk's playthrough to get an idea.

Levels 9 and 10 look near impossible without years of practice, especially that Cube Rush, which I haven't gotten to.

Ok totally gonna try Gradius V,

Gradius 3 tried it >>>>> sand lions of death LOL

With Gradius 2 I find if my build is like speedup > option > speedup >option >missile b4 the first boss it's really easy. But then I get overconfidant and screw up.

Still haven't worked out a good starting build for g3. Thinking I need to prioritize targets. Don't think I can powerup to kill top and bottom of the screen at once so soon.

After Gradius 3, you will never look at bubbles the same way again.

Compile needs to be namedropped (since Raizing was). I prefer to play their shmups with autofire and just two buttons.
Zanac X Zanac. Alas, Zanac Neo played on PS2 has more input lag than it should; one to get/keep a genuine PSX for. Thankfully, Zanac Special Version works flawlessly on PS2.
Gunhed - read here how to access more challenging modes. I recommend the freeware Ootake emulator.
The Guardian Legend - enough said.
Seirei Senshi Spriggan uses three buttons, but its Caravan modes are so unique it deserves a mention.

Give Border Down a try. Hori-scrolling that isn't bullet hell, has checkpoints, some light tactical elements to the bossfights, and is totally awesome.

Master O: Let's not even mention looping the game.

starbelle: The way 1st level was design is a disaster to navigate if you're not familiar with the level boundaries (actually the whole game feels like that lol). Getting a feel for the hitbox is a must in this game, otherwise you'll crash or miss an opportunity to kill few pesky enemies.
My typical 1st level powerup setup is as following: speedup > speedup > option > missile > option. This allows me to navigate the enemies fast enough, but also gain enough fire power to attack bottom and top enemies. You really need the missile upgrade before the level starts so you can have that advantage. Also, my advice for anyone getting in G3: map fire and missile onto two separate buttons.

You know, this game really makes me appreciate having slowdowns.

cool will try that build!

Om yeh I got Graidus V )my friend had a Ps2 they didn't want.

OMG.

"destroy the core"

and the second level "we gotta enter the ship from different points"

Amazing music. Really love it. Gradius V and II are deinfelty my favourites so far.

First I thought it was a bit easy with the repawns and option drops but , yeah it's hard.

Swear I'm gonna get every single Gradius game and an IRL vic viper haha.

Can't identify the hitbox in G2 and G3 properly yet argh.

The meteor level in Gradius V is probably one of the most awesome and intense horizontal stages ever designed in the history of STGs.

Come on, you can QFT me if you like.

Don't feel bad, even the first boss is bullshit hard in G5 (In a good way). I just started playing 5 seriously within the past month and I can only make it to stage 3 at the moment. I've got major respect for those that can 1cc it. Also it's seriously the best looking shmup I've ever seen, why the hell haven't they made a widescreen HD version yet?!

If you like Gradius maybe check out the other Konami shooting games. Salamander, Parodius, Thunder Cross II, Xexex, etc. Be sure to get Gradius Gaiden. Have you tried any of the R-Type games yet?

Maybe try some of the Psikyo games. Dragon Blaze,Strikers 1945 II, Strikers 1945 III, and Zero Gunner 2.

I think Soukyugurentai kind of has a Radiant Silvergun vibe. Maybe Einhander or R-Type Delta.

Hey now, I think all the Psikyo games are pure greatness. I bet even their slutty Mahjong games are great.

Its all about memorization in GV(and the Gradius/Parodius series in general), I took about one month to 1CCed it, 2nd loop however definitely requires some serious dodging skills.

They are! They're actually some of the fairest arcade Taisen Mahjong games in MAME, at that!

COCOA PUFFS CLUSTERFUCK is certainly a great stage. The visual overload alone is something. It never feels safe, and the boss is astonishing in both its vicious environment-exploiting attacks and its titanic death explosion. I just wish the game brought this stuff out fifteen minutes or so earlier.

*sound of drive whirring*

Zzz... *snort* wha...? WHOA! HOLY SHIT! It's:

St4 "SPACE POON"
St5 "THE ONSLAUGHT COCOA PUFFS"
St6 "GREEN SHIT EVERYWHERE feat. CAMELTRY"
St7.1 "MAXIMUM SPEED AGAIN [G.V. VER]"
St7.2 "MECHANICAL BASE AGAIN [G.V. VER]"

A line of greatness. ;-; Stage 8 "STAGE 2 AGAIN" blows but who cares after all that goodness. And then loop 2 makes everything better anyway!

Definitely any game in the Gradius/Parodius series. Also not a shmup but Alien Hominid is frustrating beyond belief
